ls1,ls6,or a ls2 for a fc rx7
Hey guys my friend wants to know what would be the better engine to put into his 1987 Mazda Rx-7. He would want to get a ls based engine. So for the price what would be the best way to go. All the engines need to have a t-56 behind them. So the choices are a ls1 from a gto. An ls6 from a corvette z06 or a ls2 from either a gto or c6 corvette. From what I have found the ls1 will run about 3500-4500. A ls6 runs about 5000 for just the engine and wiring harness, so he would have to get a transmission. We found a few ls2 with t-56s for around $6000 with everything they need. So what would be the most cost effective way to go.

A corvette pull out will have the tranmission in the transaxle. So unless you want to buy the motor and trans separately you will need to stick to an F body or a GTO pull out.
The F body LS motors don't have all the upgrades the later motors do. Like the oiling system, better flowing heads, better PCV set up, stronger coils. Also the early T56's usually require a rebuild to make right. They improved the tranmissions significantly over the years.
LS2 motors have a 4 inch bore. This allows upgrading to L92 heads. LS3 motors already have them. this could be a big deal depending upon what your ultimate HP goals are. LS2 motors also have hotter cams than a stock LS1.

Well they are wanting a good daily driver. So there is not going to be much of out in the wild. They decided to go with the ls2/t-56 from a gto. Then they are doing bolt ons and a tune and that's all the power that car will ever need. The people and hinson supercars say this car should be into the 11s with this setup. 440ish at the fly in a car that weighs 3000lbs should be quick.
