Default LS1 or 6.0L

Recently sold my Firebird and am getting back into racing.
I can buy a 2002 6.0L or a 2000 LS1 from a Camaro for the same price. My goal is to run 9.50's in a 2600 lbs Mustang that I have in the back of the garage. It will be carbed with plenty of spray and a power glide. I will be changing pistons, rods and camshaft as required. Hoping not to have to buy cylinder heads, just do some port and polish work. Looking for opinions on which one would be best for my application. Or should I post in another section?
Thanks, Ryan

The LS2 motors have all the good stuff the LS1 guys want to upgrade to. GM put the LS6 heads and cam on the LS2 motors. Also more powerful coils, better oiling and oil pans, better blocks with better oil control, improved PCV system.

Really the only reason to go with an LS1 over an 6.0 or better yet 6.2 is what kind of deal you can pricewise. Accessories placement and how well that fits in with your specific swap can affect price, especially if you are considering a truck motor.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards the 6.0L, just did not want to buy the wrong motor.
There is no cubic inch limit, I will be racing 9.90 index racing. I will only be running an alternator, electric water pump, so not worried about brackets.
A few questions, since this lsx stuff is new to me.
Are there kits to stroke the 6.0L or due I have to piece it together?
What intake manifold? I was thinking a victor jr.
Are the heads good enough for 650 hp? I understand I will have to replace valve springs.
Will a f-body oil pan fit the 6.0L block? I know I will have to change the pick up. Thanks again guys. Looks like I will be buying a 6.0L this weekend!

The F-body Oil Pan will bolt right up, and so will your Pickup.

There are plenty of Kits to stroke it..how big do you want to go?

Look for some 243 or 317 Heads..or if you want to go for some RPM's look for L92 Heads.

Thanks "The Merv". I was thinking about L92 heads, seems everybody on this site likes them. I guess I will start pricing out stroker kits too.
I priced out L92 heads from G.M. along with their carbed intake and nearly had a stroke! Being in Canada, it was almost $2500 + tax which would be almost $2800.
Are these a factory head used on anything that perhaps I might be able to find used? Or would I have to donate a bunch of $$$ to G.M., and would it be worth it?
According to newbie tech section the 2002 6.0L would come with 317 heads, wouldn't I be best just to work with these heads?

I am in the east end of Toronto. Being a long time Ford guy I know lots of places to get parts for them. If you can recommend anyone that would be great. I would love to find a set for $800!
