Question power steering pump questions for lq4?

i know that the lq4 has 3 ports on the power steering pump...1 on the pressure side and 2 on the return.....(i think) which one of these should i block off? (i don't think it matters ether one of the returns).....also what is the size of the pump fitting on the lq4 for the pressure line? Which port would that go to on a factory 1970 chevelle sb chevy steering box...(i just cant remember what line goes where and the sizes of them.....trying to get my power steering lines made and the car is done!!!

thanks

Thumbs up

There are 2 returns- the "normal" one and one for Hydrobost applications.

What did you use to block off the 2nd return line?

Thanks!

The latest info is that use of the upper return can cause noise. Use the lower port and be sure the pulley is pressed on flush w/ the end of the shaft...

A search will show more responses, as this is a recent topic.

Take the 1" pressure hose fitting out of the back of the SBC Saginaw pump and swap it with the truck pump fitting then reuse the 70 ps hoses. Mine worked perfect. As for the return fittings, rubber plug one and let her fly.

block the upper return line with a piece of hose and a bolt. I used a rubber nipple and hose clamp, and it blew it within a few miles.

I cut the top one off of mine with a sawzall and drill/tapped the hole and put a bolt in it. Works great and I don't have to worry about the hose or cap blowing off and its nice and flush. No extra jun sticking off the pump.

Here's one solution: https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...t-cap-off.html

I seriously just took an inch long 3/8" fuel line, shoved a 3/8" bolt, and clamped it down on the upper nipple. It's really simple.

I know that this is an old post.

Does anyone know if there is a pump available that does not have the second return? I would like to clean things up and reduce the number of failure points / leaks.

Thank you

Any truck that doesn't have hydroboost will have the pump you want. They're actually more common than the 3 port pumps.

He's right. It might be an odd combination for an LQ4 specifically, as these were mostly offered in 2500 trucks, which often had hydroboost.
Look for a 1500 5.3L power steering pump and you'll be golden.

We offer genuine OEM pumps if you're struggling to find one

So on a post above, it says use the lower return port or you will get noise in the ps.
‘well I am getting noise, once it warms up. Now I need to check my return line

The reason you use the lower port is to prevent mixing and aeration, since bubbles in the system will cause noise. Likewise if the system isn't fully "burped" yet, air will periodically find it's way through the system and make noise. Usually air-related noise can be resolved by raising the front end and cycling the steering back and forth a bunch of times to work the air out of the system. I also like to park the car on odd angles on slanted surfaces and do the same to "burp" any air left in the system.

If your pump works fine just swap out the reservoir to a single return, I'm 99% sure the pumps themselves are the same. ACDelco P/N 19256066.
