Default NEED HELP with vss

I need the facts on using a vss with my swap. I'm using a 2004R tranny. I keep reading conflicting views on this issue? The issue I'm having is the car idles fine and revs fine but when I drive the car it runs like a$$. I'm throwing p0502 code also. Will not using a vss cause this kind of problem? I've read posts where people don't use one and they don't mention anything about driving issues?? Then I'll read another post about speedo's,cruise control and nothing about drivability? I'm have a cable speedo and no cruise control, so do I really need a vss or not???
Thanks

So the driving problems I'm having would not be related to not having a speed sensor. Correct

wrong. it is not just for speedo or cruise....the car will run fine, but on coasting or de-accelaration,or braking especially, it gives a little extra rpm on the idle to keep from stalling.....i have a 700r4 behind mine BTW.......mine never threw a code even with VSS not hooked up

I have heard about the stalling issue. Any recommendations on which company sells the correct vss for the 2004r? I'm going to take my car to Dan at Masport motorsports in boca FL to have it tuned. I just can't figure out why it drives so bad while it runs and idles great?

a 200r4 case with a VSS setup on the *** is very very rare..as in 87 turbo T.A. setups only.this is what my friend who does transmissions told me....other than that, maybe an external reluctor ring setup on your rear near the yolk. JAGSTHATRUN.com maybe......or some kind of rigged up sensor on driveshaft

If this is like a 4L65E, the VSS has two wires running to the Transmission Control Module. This signal is necessary to tell the transmission when to shift. It sends a signal to the ECM and determines your throttle to determine kickdown and shifting up. I also know that if the wire from the ECM for speedometer is hooked to other than a factory speedometer (like a Dakota Digital, it will definately mess with the engine performance.

Jagsthatrun has a VSS that will screw onto the tranny and the the speedo cable screws onto it. They are at the link below. I don't remember if the LS1 needs a sine wave or square wave VSS, but they have both. Scroll about half way down the page.

I also have a related ? about the VSS. I have an 1989 Suburban with a 700r4 and it has the VSS that is in the speedometer. What wire or wires do I hook this VSS up to on a 02 4.8 computer?

What type of gauges are you running? Also, does the 200-4r have the vss at the tailshaft? If theres no vss on the trans and you're not running electronic speedo, you can simply have all of the trans controls deleted from the pcm and your worries will be nomore.
