Throttle body coolent line?

Default Throttle body coolent line?

So the line that runs from the heads in the front of the engine to the throttle body (98 vette ls1 with a 00 throtlebody) from what I heard is there to heat the intake charge. On my friends swap, (ls1fd) his radiator has an extra fitting on it to connect to this hose. I've also heard that you can just block it off and call it a day....? Would blocking this off prevent nessarry flow to the heads? Trying to avoid taking out the rad again and spending more money as I would need to have a port welded to my radiator for this.


Any help would be great.

You still run it to the radiator, you just bypass the throttle body.

There are several ways to do this, but I think in the end (due to simplicity) I'm going to buy this or something like it and just run the line in the upper radiator hose.

I'm not there yet, and not exactly sure what the upper hose size is.

I made the same thing for my Thunderbird and it has worked for around 10K miles. I needed to change upper radiator hose sizes to match the engine to the radiator I had which gave me a perfect location for that coolant hose.

Yeah, I just lubed it up and forced the small hose on the big radiator ports, but your idea would work too

I guess I could run it into the hose. But what if I just block it off? (after I get all the air out of the system of course)....? Does it help cool the heads?

You can't block it and get the engine to cool properly. Running the line back to the radiator or upper coolant hose is the best bet if you don't have a pressurized overflow.

I've never had my head under the hood of anything with an ls before so please clarify this, the tube goes from the heads through the tb then to the radiator into its own little inlet?

In a nutshell, yes however it depends on the vehicle. An F-Body for example is straight to the radiator while a truck goes to the overflow which is pressurized. All examples in factory form run coolant through the throttle body.

I really don't see how you guys think that tiny little passage makes a bit of difference in cooling. Lets look at the flow rate compared to the the rest of the system. the tube is 1/4" in diameter. so thats a cross sectional area of .0491 square inches it would take that thing 30 minutes to drain a gallon of fluid. compared to the main passages that flow a gallon every minute or less. so if someone can say that, other than bleeding air out of the heads, this thing actually lowers the temp more than 1 degree when its outlet is not blocked off then I say run it to the radiator. But if you are pressed for time or are just running out of money, its not going to make a bit of difference as long as you bled the air from the system.

just pull both hoses off and put a splice to hook them together to bypass the tb.

well this is what i did, I think it'll work. I had to mount my coolent temp sensor anyways.

What exactly is it? I haven't bought one yet but I'm doing the same thing (minus the coolant temp sensor...)

huh? you couldnt hook it there if thats what you are saying, unless you wanted all your coolant to end up in your overflow jug
