Default A-Body fuel tank PICS ADDED/Updated 11/24

Ok so I am thinking about trying to use a fuel tank out of a 04-06 GTO. Has anyone tried this? Also its going in a 71 chevelle.

I bought a new tank and a sump from aeromotive and tig welded it. I had the gas tank renu done. With just that alone i have almost $500 in it. Add my aeromotive a1000 and 2 filters i am around $900. I could have just bought a rock valley and saved 5 days of work. We put a module assembly from a 98 firebird in a 79 camaro tank and it worked good until 1/4 tank and hard turns. It can be done. Good luck

I ended up buying a Ricks Tank EFI for the Chevelle. I opted to upgrade to the Walbro pump. The gauge kit I bought from Autometer came with a fuel sender. My car isn't running yet. But if you total up all the fabrication you have to do with another car's tank, it ends up being costing $1100 anyway.

Not really sure bout the $1100 if the GTO tank works I only have a $125 with shipping tied up in it even if you add in the vette fpr and the fuel line it will be less than $300.

I'm curious to what you come up with. I have the same thing planned for my 70 Chevelle swap. I have a complete 06 GTO tank sitting in the garage, just haven't torn into it yet to see how difficult it'd be to adapt into the Chevelle tank.

How about a picture of the GTO tank ?.... I used a 95 Impala tank ($50) with very little modification and a Racetronix pump and wiring setup (less than $200 at the time) on my 71.. So it as a low cost setup.

the GTO tank is more like a fuel cell. it sits behind the rear seat of gto. not sure how it would work, also the filler neck is on side instead of rear like your chevelle.

Not yet. Although I'm not planning on using the whole tank. There was a thread on here (I believe KST8Engineer's thread) where the OP posted using the bucket out of an F-body and just modified it to fit into the Chevelle tank... I'm planning on something similar to that. (Kwizz did this also) I'm probably a year away from that, still working on my cowl, and AC, I'll get the engine running hopefully spring/summer.

There's more to it than just that... The opening for the GTO bucket into the GTO tank is about a 8-10 inch diameter hole in the top of the tank, The chevelle hole for the sending unit is ~3 inches. The GTO bucket is roughly 10-12 inches tall, It won't fit inside the Chevelle tank... Although I think KWIZZ had in his thread adapting the GTO bucket into the tank in his car. He did cut down the bucket so that it'd mostly fit into the tank. That's what I'm planning on trying.

There is another problem. The GTO bucket has a large 1 inch or so diameter hose that goes to a charcoal canister, and the output from the fuel pump doesn't come out the top of the bucket. It leaves the tank in a seperate fitting. It'd take some finesse, but I think it's possible.

I think there might be some confusion. I am planning on using the whole tank and installing it behind the seat, like in the new gto. And for the filler I have been contemplating putting a filler door on, don't crucify me just a thought also thought about mounting the filler in the trunk somehow.

That's good if your on a budget and you have the skills to do the fabrication. I'm unskilled in that type of work, so I just ended up paying the $1100 instead of me screwing it up and have to pay more money to get it done right.

Ok. Yeah I am on a pretty tight budget, kinda what I get out of the stuff I have on the car is the money I have to spend on it kinda thing. That being said if this works it would be a very cost effective and hopefully simple way to go. I know alot of guys use the b body tanks, but from what I've seen they have pretty low and you gotta trim the frame, so just wanna look at this as another option maybe.

really need a pic of the gto tank. definately on new ground here. the factory tank can be fabbed to accept the pump assembly. its been done and looks great (kstengineering).
BUT!!! an a-body with a aluminum filler cap (mopar/racing) style might look cool. ive thought about it myself. because i do like the 68-69 charger or maybe colbra/viper aluminum filler cap. im torn. cuz less on the quarters makes a cleaner look and less fabrication. maybe photo shop one first? the location would be critical for function and looks IMO.
