Help with C4 ZR1 project
We bought a '91 ZR1 not in a good condition.
we want to make it street/drag car , And planning to remove engine+transmission and swap for something with serious HP. something in the range of 600-700hp
What do you guys recommend for a budget of $27K
1- Engine ? Crate engine ? which block ? other options ?
2- Transmission ?
3- Rear end ? What rear end will hold that power ?
Your help is appreciated

Honestly, with a budget of $27K, time and know-how, I would do a built turbocharged LQ4.

The rear is going to be the most expensive conversion. There are very few people putting over 600rwhp to a D44 in a c4.
Drag racing kills them so you would want to go sra.

You mean the price ? Haven't decided yet
Why LQ4 ? What about ls3 ? ls7 ?
I'm not sure if there are rebuilt D44s that can hold that HP. Maybe my last solution is a straight axle.
lol , not planning to work on the lt5. LS engines are easy to mod and more common
I don't want to be ending searching for someone who knows how to work on lt5.

You can recoupe $5000+ if the LT5 and trans are in good condition.
There are cryo treats pumpkins and ways to make them live but I have yet to hear of any living long with 1.4-1.5 60fts.
There are "kits" to backhalf the vette but they are expensive and require cutting.
If you were going autox/roadracing the rear can live. It is just the repeated hard launches that gets them.

LQ based on price and availability. The LS3 or 7 will eat half your budget for the engine alone. LQ would be a fraction of the cost, then can be bored and turbo'd. You could reach your power goal with room to spare. Depending on how it is built you probably could get 800hp from it.

Not a good plan though !

Interesting ,so the lq4 block is good for these kinds of power ! what about the lq9 if you were talking about availability.
I will put this among my options , another noob questions. How do I know which stroke will be good for my setup ? Forged internals ,cam , ported heads and a supercharger looks like a good idea ? right or not ?
I will save that link for future. Thanks
I had to google that , first time I hear about ERL performance. Easier to buy a built short block than buying the block only. But need to read and search more about this.
Can you clear some of the stuff there ?
There are NA and superturbo packages , if I'm planning for a turbo or a supercharger , I should go with turbo packages as they have a lower CR ?

First off LQ9 and LQ4 the same exact engines the only difference is the piston design. So if your doing a purpose built engine in the end it won't matter. Supercharged and Turbocharged engines both require low compression. A nice forged low compression LQ4 can net you over 800 rwhp easily

LQ9 is higher compression. So you would be undoing part of the main benefit of the LQ9. You g
Could run LQ4 on forged parts and stock compression, which should make the parts more off-the-shelf=cheaper.

I think doing something different, would be to keep the LT5. Have you driven this car yet? That engine is an amazing piece of machinery. I had the opportunity to drive a stock zr1 once. I actually was trying to buy it from a local dealership but they couldn't secure financing on it. The engine omits one of the most musical sounds I have ever heard, and the power feels endless.
Before removing that motor I would contact Jeff at Pacific Northwest ZR1. He builds someone of the fastest ZR1's in the U.S.

Thanks for making this clear
I own a C4 , so what is a C4ZR1 worth to me !! Can't argue about the value of those machines, But that car needs a lot of work on body and interior, selling the engine and transmission will give me some good cash.
and in the end ,it will be a faster ZR1 with a better engine !!!
