Help! 67 Chevelle alternator steering box problem
I just dropped in an ls1 out of an 04 gto to my 67 chevelle and everything is fitting great other than the steering box. I just put a 96 jeep grand cherokee box on and it hits the alternator pulley. I tried shimming up the motor mounts a bunch but it's still hitting. Any ideas? I really don't want to relocate the alternator. I am using 1" setback plates with short/wide mounts plus 1/4-1/2 inch in shims. And I already did some shaving to the box.

That's my thread (on hold now as well) and sorry to say no real info about an alternator hitting the box. I have the same box, but my issue (and the issue of many others as well) was the power steering pulley (not the alt) hitting it. Relocating might not be what you want to do, but other than shims and shims and shims or going back it might be the simplest way to go. You could try putting it high on the pass side, picking up the front drive setup from another car or seeing what aftermarket (kwik, etc) pieces might be out there.

What's the diameter of your pulley? You may be able to get a smaller one to give you some extra clearance.

Buy and Kwik performance bracket and be done with. I Didnt know about Kwik performance and spend $1000 for the S/P performance ,they come with everything you need and move the Alternator to the top on my 67 Chevelle

I use to offer a relocation bracket I developed during my build when I had the same issue but much worse sense my engine is placed foward but I ran out of them. I suggest you purchase a relocation bracket kit from speedway motors. Looks like a very nice kit for the money includes belt. Locates the alt higher on the drivers side. Refer to link

Sounds like I'm going to have to relocate. I guess my alternator question was pointless because I am having clearance issues on the pulley which I'm thinking is the same size no matter the alternator right?

I had to grind the alternator housing and the steering box to get enough clearance when I had the ls1. I would try adding some spacers under the driver side mount and grinding before I bought new brackets.
