Default 4l80e

Since my 700r4 has taken dump for the 30th time, I have put the th350 back in the car untill I can get a 4l80e. I don't know the differences in the years and which one would be good for me. I have the PCM out of an 03 silverado and it had a 4l60e. I removed all the wiring from the harness but I can put it back in to control the trans. Can someone help educate me on pros and cons and differences between the years.

Sorry, this is off topic, but you can use most of your 4L60E wiring to run a 4L80E. I think you just need to swap a wire or two. If I would have known this when I installed my 4L80E, I would have done things much differently.

As far as the transmissions go, the earlier design has both cooler fittings up by the bell housing. The the later transmission moves one of those fittings (the return) back about 18". If you have a tight trans tunnel back there, this can be a problem because you need some space to have the tubing make a 90* turn. The 4L80E always came in trucks, and trucks always have plenty of room so it's easy to overlook.

Page 18 has all the info

Also if you do have the later model I believe 96 and up make sure you use the correct trans line at rear it has an extension tube if not you'll wipe out the trans.
If you need info let me know just finished mine, rebuilt Transgo HD2 Don't know your setup but 4L80 uses different flexplate(flat) with spacer and longer bolts if using the stock converter if aftermarket you have options

I read the PDF link you sent me. Had I known it was that easy I wouldn't have removed all the trans wiring from my harness. Luckily I have another harness so I may just make that one a swap in for when I do the trans.

The older shell of the 4l80e has 2 main differences maybe more...

First as you indicated the cooler line on the older version are up front. This is actually a god thing at least in my case.... more room.

Second the internal luberation of the transmision was changed for the newer transmisions. I'm not sure what one is better but Jake had no worries and actually likes the older units better. With the mods he dos you will have no worries. I'm in canada and I ordered one from him... Its in the garage and ready for installation when my car comes back for hte body shop!

There may be other diffences. I expect if you called Jakes Performance they could answer all your questions and then some. I had a great experience dealing with them!

Does any one know what years the old/new designs were. I read somewhere that newer ones have TCM in the valve body, and what mods are needed. I was looking at Monster Transmissions and Ebay, these things are pricey. I've seen people say they got their's for 300-400 bucks. I can't find one for that. On Ebay empty cases are 300-400. Does anyone have one for sale for 300-400 bucks?

I found mine for $600 in a junk yard using car-part.com and it came with a 6 month warranty. Didn't rebuild it or anything, just drained the fluid, dropped the pan and put in a new filter. I have an extra neutral safety switch if you need it, it has the 2 smaller plugs instead of the 1 larger one...if you don't get one with your trans.

I always seem to find my best deals on chevy express vans for some reason. I guess people don't think of them as being worth much. There is one for sale right not now 60k miles for 650 & the price keeps going down. I'll prob have to go buy it ha ha.

I think I will just stick with the th350 for right now. It works great and won't break, just no overdrive. When I put the turbos on I'll more than likely have to change the gears so the the th350 shouldn't be too much of an issue.

05 up came with the 5 pinion planets and a better low roller clutch.
The clutch can be retro'd but requires the newer race/housing, I forget the name.

Just keep an eye out in Craigs list etc and you'll find one.
The converter is the next biggest expense.

Yeah I keep winning a few bucks here and there. I almost always hit one or two numbers. Man it would solve some problems hitting the big one.

1. Pay off house.
2. Pay off all other debt.
3. 6.2/ 6 speed.
4. Inform all former girlfriends that I am now filthy rich.
