Default 87 Chevy LS swap which trans?

Truck was a TBI 305 and is now a carbed 383. Looking to do a swap and a single turbo. Thinking of 5.3/4.8 stock motor with a cam and single turbo. Question is should I keep the beefed up TH350 or go with the 4l60 while I'm at it. Hoping to make 500hp and the truck will be a cruiser. Looking for motor soon so might save money to buy them together. Thanks

If your sticking with an automatic I would go with the over drive in the 4l60 over the three speed th350.

I was thinking the overdrive would be nice but I was wondering about durability compared to th350.

A 4l60e wont hold up to 500hp very long unless you spend alot of money at FLT. A stock 4L80e with a shift kit would hold up fine and give you overdrive for cruising. That deal sounds good to me except sell the 4l60e and pick up a 4l80e.

If the tran doesn't work for me probably not such a good deal. Then I would have to buy an 80 and sell the 60.

Agreed, something with a 4L80E would be the best. They are very durable and perfect for your setup. You should have plenty of room in the trans tunnel for the -80, which is also important. The only catch is that they were much more common behind the 6.0L than behind the 5.3 or 4.8. They're out there, but just not as easy to find.

Maybe for a core but most good low miles 80's run $800 bucks most places. The good thing is the 4.8L harness and PCM can be made to work with the 4l80e. All you need is a flat 6.0L flexplate that has a spacer and it bolts right up.
