Question Tranny crossmember for a 1st gen camaro? What to use?

Ive read a lot of threads but still didnt see what i needed to know. Ok so I have the 5.3 engine and 4l65e in the car but now what tranny crossmember to use or make or mod to make work? The engine is mounted up just need the tranny crossmember now so i can move forward. <<< I also have a t56 I will be installing into the car another day when i get everything for the swap but its auto for now. I also hope this crossmember i make or buy will work with a t56 if not another will be made or bought. Anyone know if it will work for both? >>>.

The tranny crossmember that came with this car might have been made for a th350/pg as there is no way for it to work in the stock location when mounted to the frame of the car. I couldn't even get it to even come close to mount up. I don't think I can even modify this crossmember to work so ill have to start from scratch it seems.

I have a band saw and welder to fab a crossmember but before I do this, what did you guys use or buy?

Also don't feel like spending $300 on one I found on a websight....

You can't slide it back and re drill the holes in the subframe?

Nope, the double hump on crossmember hits the floor pan. The floor pan has double humps for it in stock location for it to fit.

Bowtie Overdrives sells a crossmember for a 700R4 for around $175. I know it fits the 4L60e, so it should fit the 4l65e. You're not going to find one for much less than that, so if that's still too much, it's time to break out the welder.....

Well I measured the 65 to a700 and the 65 is longer but not by much it seemed. Maybe I did it wrong but it was a quicky measurement.

I still wonder if I make or buy a crossmember for the auto will it fit a t56?

Steve 68 I pmd you, I'd like to get that Xmember if possible.

Anyone else on this issue? If not I may buy that Bowie Xmember if I feel it's too much work to make my own. Anyone make his own or modify one off another car?

I mod'd at TH400 one for my Nova.. I just cut the Crossmember, welded some 1/4" plates steel on the ends and added a 2x4 tube accross and welded a tab on.

Thanks BCZEE, that'll help me on my decision to mod one. That looks good. Too bad for me the one I have doesn't have that type of mounts to the subframe. Its like stamped steel. Maybe ill find a Xmember from another vehicle cheap to make it work.

Bump it up, been a long time since I've been back.
I'm gonna try to make my own here soon, unless someone has a better way?

Here's my design I've been working on...
I'll probably redo the side brackets out of thinner angle iron instead of 3/16" flat plate like it is now... maybe...
If you can weld better than I can, you won't need half the bolts I do...

Would the new Hooker LS Swap crossmember work for you? They're for 1st gen Camaros and 3rd gen Nova's. I just installed one in a '74 Nova.

It's fairly easy to find or make a 4L60 crossmember for an LS swap in a 1st-gen Camaro. What's not so easy is to find one that advertises what degree of engine inclination you are going to end up with after it's installed with the engine mounts you are using AND provides maximized exhaust passage height. That is a difficult task since the need to stuff the crossmember into the floor pockets to achieve maximum exhaust passage height rule out using the universal adjustable type crossmembers as they need to be lower than the pockets in order to provide the adjustable feature. In other words, the adjustability comes at the price of exhaust clearance. The Hooker 12625HKR crossmember will provide all the above mentioned features, but the fitment and engine inclination angle it will provide with your engine mounts is unknown (it was designed to work with the Hooker 12618HKR engine mount bracket kit).

I like the ats , well...what I read about it. I don't like 360. price tag.

Second thought on this Trans Adapt sells 3 universal trans crossmembers for about 70 bucks says t56 & 4l60. They have flat 3"drop and 6inch drop.
