Default Place Your Bets! 1/4 Mile Estimate for Stock Carb'd 5.3 Nova

Taking my recently completed swap Nova to WIR for the TestNTune on Friday to see what she can do in stock 5.3 trim. Here are the specs:

Engine:
-Junkyard '03 5.3 with 80K-COMPLETELY STOCK
-Good consistant compression in all holes
-Rebuilt Demon 750, still in tuning stages
-Edelbrock dual plane
-MSD 6010 (open to advice on pill or tune)
-Ebay SS 4th gen F-body headers
-Stock truck coils/wires
-New NGK TR55 plugs

Chassis:
Mild performance rebuilt TH350
2400 Stall convertor
Stock open 2.90ish rear end
BFGoodrich 245R14 rears
Estimated weight (260lbs driver)...3500lbs

So place your bets! I am hoping for low 14's to high 13's

I am open to suggestions, but keep it constructive. I know this is not the optimum setup for performance, but it is what I have for now.

I would especially appreciate any recommendations for MSD tuning!

These are the most recent pics I got of the car and engine. I'l get some more at the races. Maybe some video too!

I think she'll be good for a low-14 second pass. The rear is going to hurt your times.

Well I figured the broom prop will act like a MEGA RAM AIR! Maybe even create some lift on the front, lighten the car up!

Sounds like my guess for 14's is right, 13's is getting pretty hopeful! I know my worst enemy is the highway gears. Maybe I'll have to keep my eye out for a good sale or a clean used set. Here are a couple pics my buddy sent me from the New London car show I went to last weekend. Lots of guys interested in the budget junkyard swap. Maybe I oughta have my 145lb fiance drive and cut out my additional 120lbs!

Oh you know it! Craiglist special scored those 14" pieces of 1975! I am hoping to upgrade in the not to far off future. I'm thinking Weld Draglites. More modern, but not Pro-touring looking. And not unilug, what a PITA!

Care to throw your name in the hat on 1/4 mile times?? Com'n you know you wanna!

I'm trying to get my 100lb girlfriend to race mine this fall to see what kind of time I can pick up. She's a little scared though, not so much of the car but of breaking it. Last thing she wants is for me to drop more money on the car while we are trying to move out and get married lol.

I'm going to say 14.40s. The 2.90s don't help but the open diff. will probably still spin the tire. I hate my open diff. and with 3.73s it spins pretty easy lol

Going against the grain here, if 4 th gens that are a tad heavier with 3.23s can run mid 13s stock. I don't see any reason why you can't at least squeeze out 13.60-70 with a carbed 5.3 with exhaust and mild stall. 😜

Awesome, thanks for all the input guys!

I think you all hit the nail on the head, those 2.90s have to go!

Also I hit up the truck scales on the way home last night. Minus the driver:

TOTAL:
3260LBS
100%

FRONT
1695
52%

REAR:
1565
48%

So my 3500lbs (with 260lbs driver) estimate was almost spot on.

Keep the guesses coming! I will post results Saturday morning.

For sh*ts and giggles:

Carcraft did a junkyard 5.3, mech 750 Holley, GMPP single plane, and header build and pulled almost 340HP stock.

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...e/viewall.html

Suck Squeeze Bang Blow did Youtube dyno test on a crate 5.3 with several different induction setups. The winner was a mech 750, Edelbrock dual plane and headers for just under 350HP and 360lbft

Using a 15% drivetrain loss, thats 285 wheel HP.

Plugging 3500lbs and 285HP into several easy 1/4 mile online calculators I get estimated from 13.3 to 13.5. Obviously not taking into account tire,gear,driver,weather...etc. But it makes me more confident in a high 13 second run!

Your gear ratio, open diff and tires are going prevent any 13 second run. I know nothing about the track your going to, but on friday nights here the tracks aren't even treated.

Doesn't matter what you run as long as you have a smile on your face when you leave. There is always someone with more money into their car that can go faster, but how many people are you going to run into at the track with that clean of an LS swap in a 4-door Nova no less?

I am going to go with mid 14s with low 14s possible as you tune it and gain experience. I don't think high 13s are going to be easy with those tires and open 2.90s.

Be sure to give the car a very thorough go-over before, during and after the test & tune. Are you going to pass tech with your battery relocation? I'm pretty sure it's not NHRA legal the way you did it, but they may still let it go.

mid to high 14's ask me how I know.

My bone stock ls1/4l60e with 3.08 open rear simlar weight car ran a best of 14.01 @ 101 mph.

Second trip to drag strip only change was upgrading the open rear to a limited slip. best pass 13.701 @ 101 mph.

Hope I'm wrong and you can get it in the 13's with it.

Right on Bandit! Its all about having fun and being back in my old High School Nova puts a smile on my face everytime I hit the pedal! Its fun to show off ingenuity on a budget, a lot of guys really appreciate it! Thanks for the kind words.

You have brought up concerns about the battery before. Wisconsin International Raceway states "Must comply with IHRA regulations". Going through the IHRA rulebook:

-Secured with min of 2 3/8 bolts. I have 4 1/4" bolts
-Seperated by .024 steel firewall. Stock trunk walls meets that. And it is in a sealed container.
-Kill switch on +, must kill all electrical function. I have a Flaming River BIG SWITCH on the + cable.

That is the general regs, I am not sure if there is a specific class I should check out. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks Bandit!

Not sure if the Stock Trunk Walls would be considered a Sealed Container (the Trunk to Cab wall/support has way to many holes).. most of the time they expect to see a battery in a smaller box within the Trunk. But if they see it that way.. more power to ya.. Go 4 it !

and yes.. It is all about the FUN !...

Get that timeslip posted this weekend !.. oh, BTW.. what it the prize for closes guess ! LOL
