Default fuel injected ls1 in carbed chevette question

I did a search but i have a quick question in relation to the fuel system. i haven't dropped the chevette tank, but can i reuse it with a different fuel pump for the fuel injection?

Does it have an intank pump, or external?

actually i'm fairly confused now if it's in tank or not. I thought for sure it was in tank but now im thinking otherwise. I've done the ls1 swap on a mustang so i was able to just use that fuel pick up with that pump. i'm a little in the dark here

I thought all Chevettes were carbureted? Are you sure it has an electric fuel pump?

Yes it was. I am confusing the fuel pick up with the fuel pump. So I guess my question is can I run say a mustang fuel pick up and pump in the stock tank and wire that up?

Get an in tank fuel pump conversion from Tanks Inc. It's a kit that allows you to put an EFI pump into any tank. Just make sure you clean it out and air it out good first because you have to cut a hole in the top of the tank.

I doubt the Mustang sender will fit the Chevette tank. As just mentioned, you'll need to modify the tank to put a pump in it unless it has the big sender hole, about a 3" hole, in that case you could get a GM sender and pump and mod it to fit. The down side is your tank won't be baffled, but would work as long as the fuel level didn't get too low.

So what's the alternative to this? A fuel cell mounted in the trunk/hatch area?

post a pic of your current tank and pickup (pump, if it has an intank).
There are a lot of options depending on the tank shape and/or pickup.

You can mod your tank/sender to accept a pump. Personally after dealing with noisy externals I would mod your tank. You can very likely use the stock sender and adapt a return line if needed.

And yeah monzas had an electric pump too and a carb. GM seemed to do it on oddballs, haha. LS in a chevette? Thats gonna be sweet

Well even if it has a low pressure intank pump, does it have a sump in it? If you just hang an in tank pump in there without a sump, it wont be much better than an external. I'm just guessing here, but an LS1 chevette is unlikely to be just a cruiser. If you have quarter mile aspirations, you might need a sump in there.

I would take a look at the Aeromotive stealth modules. Yes they are a bit more costly upfront, but the pump is very quiet and quality is beyond equal.
I would not be surprised to see an intank electric with the carb. Do you recall seeing a mechanical pump mounted on the engine?

You need to really get this right so if you need to spend a few bucks...do it because this is key in getting the engine to run right

I appreciate all the replies. I finally got home from school and pulled the tank. This thing is coming together. As some of you guess the mustang sender is too tall to fit in the tank. I suspect the fuel pump was on the block of the old engine. Here are some pictures of what I'm working with. What's the next step?

Default chevette/ls1 fueling

I'd keep the chevette sending unit(that way you keep the chevette gas gage) buy a walbro external pump and corvette filter/regulator and you're pretty much done with the tank end of things, now all you have to do is run the fuel line to the front of the car.

Measure the depth of your gas tank from the top of the sender opening and find a sender that is that length. This one is for an LLV and is somewhere around 10 or 11 inches, one of the shortest ones I've seen. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...072&cc=1360279 Then get you a pump (walbro255 for example) and put it in the tank.

Or just get a sender that's longer than your tank is deep and cut it to fit.
