64 nova 5.3L LS running - how to wire all my gauges? :( HELP
Hi all,
posted the Nova on here. https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...l#post18265267
It is a running driving car but only has the stock gauges and even those arent hooked up. Anyone on here know if I can wire this engine to my stock guages?
heres what i need to figure out and have no experience with it:
1 -how to wire my stock speedo, oil, temp, battery, fuel and an RPM gauge if i can?
2 -the electric fan kicks on pretty fast when driving, not sure if it should or if this block runs hot. but should i have the fan set up so i can flip a switch and leave it on or set it up to stay on when the key is in accessory mode?

take a picture of the back of the gauges and post it.
Think of each sender as varying resistance vs. whatever it measures. The gauge needle is calibrated to display this, be it temp, pressure, fuel level. etc.
The (each, unless they are combined) gauge gets a ground, 12V+, 12V+ from your headlight switch (for back lighting) and one wire which attaches to the sensor. Most sensors are grounded through the engine, but the fuel level probably has a ground wire you need to attach to a solid ground.
Make absolutely sure the grounds are good. Be that the engine grounds, chassis grounds, gauge grounds, etc.

You can get an adapter that replaces the oil pressure sending unit behind the intake and use an old school 1/8" thread oil pressure sending unit. Temperature you can get from the passenger head, there should be a plug with a 8mm hex close to the firewall, above the exhaust manifold. Some people drill the hole larger and reuse their old sending unit, but you can get a one wire sending unit that will thread into the hole. Battery should be easy just 12v and a ground. Speedo will be difficult, most people that want it to look stock find an electronic gauge that has the same sweep( path/distance the needle travels) and replace it's face/needle with the old gauges. They make boxes that convert electric to mechanical but they are expensive. You didn't say if the tank was stock or what sending unit but the stock gauge is probably looking for 90ohms when full.

No the idiot lights definitely wont work for me. I was asking how to run a tach, temp, oil, and batt gauge with an LS engine. Can i just buy the same little cluster of 3-4 gauges like they sell at oreillys and it all connects pretty simple?

Tach signal comes from the ecu output, set for 4 cylinder.
Mechanical speedo is a problem. There are tailstocks to add a mechanical speedo output to a 4L60. But since you're buying new gauges, just get an electric. Ecu provides that signal.
All the rest of the gauges just run off the sender you get with them.
You need to determine how the fan is triggered, ecu, temp switch, etc.
