Default WI junkyard closing 4k cars getting crushed

Pretty sad

http://www.oldcarsweekly.com/feature...ed-winter-2014

When the snow begins to fly this winter in East Troy, Wis., there will be 4,000 less old cars left to give their last bit of parts.

The 27-acre Troy Auto Parts in East Troy is closing, and the land it occupies must be completely cleared of its 4,000-plus-car inventory, which dates as far back as the 1950s.

“I would say we have about 30 or more cars back to the 1950s, and a whole bunch of 1960s and 1970s cars; 99 percent of them are American,” said Ryan Sie, a yard employee and the car guy who is organizing this final appeal to car collectors to fetch parts off the cars before they go to the graveyard in the sky.

“I have been putting cars off to the side that are worth saving,” Sie said. “When the time comes that they are getting in the way, then they will be crushed. This whole lot has to be cleared.”

The cars must be gone before winter, so time is of the essence. From the images posted on the yard’s Craigslist post, there appear to be several salvageable trim parts and even a usable panel or two. The inventory includes a 1958 Buick, Thunderbird “Squarebirds”, Chevrolet Impala and Bel Air models from the 1960s, and even a finned Imperial and a 1960s Imperial coupe, among many others.

Ive seen this posted on other forums, and apparently a lot has already beed crushed out. Always sucks to see the older yards crushed out. One of my favorite old yards around me was crushed out a few years ago and their cars went back to the 20's.

That is going to be a SAD loss! Wish I still lived in WI, I'd make a trip up to steal some parts. Maybe only being open 2 days a week for a total of 10hours in part of the problem...

This is the younger gen getting handed the reins. We can't really fault them for it. They grown up in a disposable society where nothing is fixed. When something is broken, they've been taught to recycle it and start again with new.

Very sad.

It is sad that some badly needed parts will be gone forever, but there is a reason that they have been sitting unwanted in these yards for all those years...

How true. What they don't know is that everything scrap goes to China and is sold back to us in the form of a Harbor Freight tool or something like it.

Yep, looking at that picture of the 62 Biscayne/Belair 2 door post car. Damn, would be nice to have some spare parts. The trunk lid looks pretty decent.

Dont get all misty eyed about that yard. Been there. Everything has been picked over really bad. Pictures sure are deceiving. Crazy prices. Stuff has been sunk in the ground for so long. Everything is shot.

I think this sums it up. All the yards want exorbitant prices, too much cash to bring back one of these cars, and there is no market for it.

I've been past this lot dozens of times and I remember thinking that most of the frames have to be shot, but plenty of bodies would be cool as nostalgia stock cars. I can only imagine the soil contamination there. Eeecks !!!

Seems like all the yards near me crush the cars within a few weeks of getting them. I walk the yards at lunch time just to see if there is anything I might want and if there is hit it with tools that evening.

I live fairly close to this yard. Does anyone need anything? I can go and grab them and ship them to you if you would like. It's sad to see all those cars crushed. PM me if you want something and I'll do my best.

Seriously? Huge difference. Mostly cheapo crap vs high quality durable tools.

There's a reason why Harbor Freight is so cheap.
