Question 4.8 waterpump / accessories issues 1966 GTO

Hey Guys,

We got the motor and transmission in the vehicle and started ordering front accessories and found that the water pump is not going to work. We just went with the standard truck water pump from Gates but it interferes with the throttle body and cable. We did buy a kit from Holley for bracket spacing, it was listed as the one for truck spacing. Also, it looks like we may need a smaller pulley for the power steering pump. If anyone has any more information on which water pump should work and the placement of things I would really appreciate it. Photos of the issue we are running into are attached.

Thank
-Allan

pretty common issue, an 07+ truck pump has an angled top port that will fit with a little clearance.
Which PS pump are you using? The vette ones have a different shaft diameter and fewer pulley selections.

Question

Okay, I think we got the 04 ish water pump. We will try to exchange it for the 07+ one. The power steering pump is whichever one came with the motor. Its a 4.8 out of an 04ish vehicle (from what the seller told us). Regarding the power steering pump, any ideas about the pulley size?

steering pulley by Dorman 300-130 should work for you. I have a 06 5.3 in my skyark. I had to press pulley on little further than flush with shaft for better belt alignment.

Do you also have to get the camaro tensioner or does the original truck tensioner bolt on?

Pulley options:

LS3 Camaro water pump info, yes, requires the LS3 tensioner.

Question

Okay i got the correct water pump ordered and we have the holley 21-3 LS ACCESSORY DRIVE BRACKET - INSTALLATION KIT FOR LONG ALIGNMENT. Do we need the Holley bracket to use with this kit ( https://www.holley.com/products/acce...y/parts/20-135 )

Or do we need any of these parts at all? We have the smaller pulley for the PS Pump and correct water pump on the way.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge, this is a project car my dad and I are working on and plan to use it for the get away car for my wedding in may so were really excited to get her running!

A better clarification of EXACLTY what you've got and EXACTLY whai you're trying to do would help. Lots of A body guys running stock truck accessories.
Also, double check the instructions on the holley bracket for the PS pump you'll need.

Looks like you have the correct kit to go with your drive spacing kit. You will also need to use a different power steering pump with the Holley kit. It's setup to use a corvette power steering pump and reservoir.

we have a 4.8 engine w/4l60e
we have this Holley 21-3 bracket kit ( https://www.holley.com/products/acce...rts/parts/21-3 )
We have the 2007+ truck water pump with the angled port that will not interfere with the throttle body
We have the power steering pump from the truck engine
We have the alternator from the truck engine
We have ordered the smaller Dorman pulley for the PS Pump

I think were just missing something simple or have the wrong part in some place possibly.

Just trying to get everything to fit together is where were running into some issues.

The new water pump is on the way as well as the smaller pulley for the PS Pump

I assume you're putting on an LS1 intake with cable TB for hood clearance.
Did you see if you could use the truck PS/Alt bracket? Minor mod it will work.
If you use the holley bracket, you'll need 1) bracket, 2) truck spacer, 3) corvette PS pump, reservoir, 4) A different pulley from the one you ordered.
Pic of LS1 intake truck PS/Alt bracket.

Thats correct
We are using an LS1 intake with cable throttle body
Better plan of action may be to return the holley brackets and see if we can mod the truck PS/Alt Bracket? Any idea what that mod is?

Also, We are not running any A/C at the moment but i see your water pump port is on the front, I think the one we ordered was more angled at the top off to the passengers side rather than the front. Will that pose any problems that you know of.

Thanks again everyone

Do a search here, lots have done it. You just need to cut off the part of the stock bracket that holds the idler. I relocated the idler near the crank, but there are several companies the sell an "idler relocation kit". Dirty Dingo comes to mind.
Don't worry about my water pump, yours will work fine with just a little clearancing. Again, search here, pics available.
Without AC, you just use the stock tensioner as is.

This is the bracket I ordered. Take a look at the link and it shows the mod to the original alternator bracket. This with a smaller P/S Pulley will give the clearance needed.

Which tensioner are you using? The pictures in the link appear not to have one on the motor. We have the truck tensioner but it doesn't look like it is going to work in the configuration.

The last pic shows a standard truck tensioner mounted to the passenger side of the water pump.
Um, are you looking at the AC tensioner on your motor instead?

Thought that was AC....

Thanks!
That should give us enough to work on for a few weeks, then the search for a radiator begins, you happen to know of one with a built in trans cooler? Or is there a better budget option?
