Default LSx and 4l60e into a G-body

Im in the planning stages of my engine swap and was wondering what tranny crossmember to use? I have done my research and have decided to use John B's motor mounts and oil pan if he still offers them. I plan on buying an iceman crossmember but need to know which one to buy. Will the one for the 4L60e work? I want this to be as bolt in as possible with little to no fabrication. Any other input would be appreciated like things to look for or items to buy. Thanks in advance.

Im right in the middle of doing the swap in an 80 el camino. I used Johns mounts and pan. Quality work and a nice guy. My motor isnt bolted in just yet but we are doing that today. If I had to do it again I would take the exhaust manifolds off and the passenger side coil packs off (should of done that anyway) I'm willing ta help ya since I'm doing it right now. PM me if you got any specific questions. Also John B and Gbody are cool guys that helped me when I asked them questions.

Hey thanks. I have been following your build up. That is a sweet elky. Im doing a cam swap and piecing the engine together. I know this way is a pain but it has worked with my budget which is very little. I have been working on this car for the better part of three years but being in the millitary makes it a bit difficult. Thanks for the info and will definately be following your thread.

Johns mounts put the trans mount back about 3 inches i think, we're making our x-member now. the stock f body x-member will work, with alot of fabing mind you. Its easiest to just mod the stock x-member for the g body(its longer than the f body one) Either way your gonna have to do some fab work here near as i can tell. Unless you can find a place that makes a x-member for the application, I havent. There is a place you can get a x-member for the 4l60e that bolts in to the g-body frame however it depends if it matches how far back johns mounts put the trans mount. So it might work but it might not.

I see. I was trying to make this kind of bolt in deal. I was planning on getting the Iceman 4L60E crossmember since its a dual hump and allows for the 3" exhaust im running. I guess I'll buy the stock piece and modify as needed.

Well look at that x-member, the bolt in piece may work. The reason im not using it is my budget. if you can get measurements on the x-member you could tell if it will work for you or not.

Next time im in the shop which should be monday I'll get some measurements of the trans posistion with Johns mounts for ya. That should help some. I'll prolly just measure from the back of the engine craddle back to the trans mount.

Mines going ok. I got my harness back and they did a great job. Should be easy as cake to hook up.

update, with johns mounts and a 4l60e it puts the trans mount 36 1/2 inches from the engine craddle. As measure from the back of the engine cross member to the center of the trans mount bolt.

I just finished putting a 5.3/4l60e into my 85 Monte Carlo SS. I just modified my existing crossmember, but there is a guy on montecarloss.com that makes a crossmember for the 4l60e swap. I think his name is Rick Fisher, if you are interested, I will dig for his e-mail address.

I don't think there is any way around SOME modification, you are going to have to modify the length of your driveshaft at least. I have a website where I am doing a writeup on my swap and the pitfalls I ran into: http://mykidz.net/montess

Thanks Darthmonte. Rick Fisher is iceman over on Maliburacing and he builds crossmembers and rear control arms for our cars. Im going to buy my crossmember from him but wanted to know if I had to mod it. Oh well. I guess the plasma cutter will be my friend. Just picked up my LS1 block and crank and have a trail on some heads.

I just measured, and center on my trans mount bolt for the 4l60e is 2 1/4 inches forward from the edge of my th200-4r crossmember. Or, 3 3/4 inches forward from old center to new center. It is a Rick Fisher th200-4r crossmember, and I am using the S&P standard motor mount plates. Hope this helps.

Iceman does great work - I used one of his x-members on my old Monte and I would highly recommend him. Obviously, John B does too, for that matter. Good luck on the swap and don't forget the pictures when it's finished!

Darthmonte I was checking out your web page and noticed that you used the S&P mounts. These are similar to the carshop adapter plates. What oil pan did you use? Im having a hell of a time finding an F-body oil pan to modify. Just wondering if you used the 5.3 pan caise I got one of those laying around.

Yep, I used the 5.3 pan. It cleared the crossmember fine, but it hangs really low.

Grr, had his pan cut 2" and also cut the pick-up 2" also...here are the before and after shots...i plan on using the 5.3 pan and doing the same thing. IMO it's a lot cheaper to go this route since people charge so much for the F-body oil pan...not to mention $225 to $250 to mod it so it can fit you chassis. I bought my pan shipped for $58bucks and i'm sure it won't cost more than about $50 to have it cut 2" and rewelded.
