ls or 6.0 vortech
Hello, I'm new to the site and plan on doing a conversion of either a 6.0 truck engine or an ls1. What is the opinion of this site on which is the best for my truck. I have a 95 gmc with 5.7 and 4l60e, 342 posi, it is a two wheel drive short bed. I want it to produce at lease 400 horse when completed. I think having the aluminum block and heads would be my first choice, these trucks are heavy enough as it is. Hope you guys can help.
thanks

either engine will be capable of 400 plus, its just a matter of whats available to you and what you can spend. you can pick up a 6.0 relatively cheap compared to the ls1. the aluminum block would definately lighten the load of your truck though.

I'm leaning toward the ls1. Its got the correct intake, I'll have to change the accessory brackets for the truck, but, thats not a big deal. I've got a friend hear at the lake that does nothing but tune ls and lt1 engines. He's bad *** with the lap top. He does a lot of tuning with another friend of ours that has a rear wheel dyno. He likes both set ups, but, prefers the 6.0 truck set up cause they are cheaper to purchase. He also does the wiring to set up the new engine with the old wiring harness. He prefers to use the wiring with the ls or 6.0 instead of buying a painless.

Why does the LS1 have the correct intake? The truck intake should clear your hood and it makes better torque to ~6k, in fact from everything I have seen the truck intake is superior to the LS1 unless you are looking to make power over 6000rpm. It comes pretty close to the LS6 intake too.
Anyway if you are going to swap the accys over to truck accys you will have interference with a truck intake (the idler pulley and TB will fight for the same space and unless you get a new (I think its 2006 or 07) water pump the outlet will also fight with the TB for space)

I would recommend the 6.0L truck hands down. It will be substancially cheaper. If you are looking for a complete engine package, check out our website or let me know. We can also get you setup with just a harness and controller if that is what you are looking for too.

Man, thanks for the info. I was leaning toward the ls1, but, maybe I've changed my mind. If I bought a complete package with the accys., that might be the easiest way to go. That way I could just sell my stuff complete with tranny and everything. I'm not that worried about the 88 lbs, it would have been nice to save a little weight up front. I plan on doing a little drag racing with it also. I'll probably try to do little more to the engine before I install it, cam, springs, some programming after installed and probably a 2000 or 2200 stall. I'm planning a 4 bar or cal-trac set up if I keep my leafs.

Greate Thread...!!!
Wow! This is the answer to some of my questions. Thanks to you all.
I would go vortec 6.0L. The difference in price worth the extra weight and you are also getting 300mL more.
I'm looking for a good deal on LQ4 or LQ9. I'm about to get decided for LQ4, because it's cheaper than the LQ9 and most of the mods I'm planing to do to it will get the same power of a LQ9.
Good luck with your project!

Only difference of note between the LQ4 and LQ9 is the reciprocating assembly. Both use the same 317 heads, intake, and exhaust. Any OEM tuning differences will be moot if he has his buddy re-tune the setup.

The only difference outside of the PCM cal is flat top vs dished pistons since GM went to common rods. (Both run 317 AL heads with the same intake and exhaust.)

We could do that for you. Give me a call and we can get it all put together.
Check out our website, http://www.schwankeshortblocks.com/E...%20Package.htm
That is a complete turn key package, if you just want the engine, we can deal with you on that as well.
