Default How long has your 12 bolt lasted?

I've found a few 12 bolts locally and I can't seem to find a 9" in my price range. I really don't want to spend this kind of money on a rear end twice. So for those of you with 12 bolts, how badly have you beaten them and how had they held up?

If you could say your axle spline, gears, horsepower, and 60's that would be great.

If I could have done it again, and it was available, I would have gotten an S60 from Strange.

As it stands, I have broken 3 sets of ring-pinnion, and 2 posis in my 12bolt since buying it in 2003/4

I hate 12-bolts. I dont like the porasidic drag of the lower pinion of a 9" either.

Strange 12 bolt, 3.73 gears, 33 spline axles. I just have bolt ons and have only went to the track once with it, and I have never had a problem. I realize im probably not much help since I dont have high HP and dont track the car, but the rear has been great for me!

What is your axle spline, gears, horsepower, 60', 1/8th mile time and mph would help me too.

Thanks for the input.

Have my Moser 12 bolt for probably close to 8-9 years now, just recently put a spool in it but nothing was wrong with the posi I took out.
Many low 1.3 60' transbrake launches and even a 1.29 off the footbrake with it.
Never had an issue.

Does whine like a pregnant schoolgirl though, did from day 1.

I had a 12 bolt in my 72 Chevelle and it whined pretty good. But I could only hear it whine on decel, but the wear pattern was spot on and everything was new. Does anyone know what causes them to whine so much more compared to a 9"?

i'd rather have a 9" but that's just me. Not to mention one gear swap and it's cheaper already plus more gearing options. Also gear backlash doesn't change from housing deflection like a 12 bolt.

Aside from the Tru Trac going from "driving like stock" to "Acting like a Ball Breaking locker" its been fine, it does have a whine but depending on how the gears are set, your whine maybe on the Accel or on the Decel, and a Moser Built unit was Noiser (3.42's) then my Eastside Perf installed 4.10's

Edit:

I do leave the line at around 5,500 rpms or so.

33 spline axles and 4.56 gears. I broke 2 sets of 4.56's and one set of 4.10's

Car made 450 when I broke the 4.10's and 507 when I broke the 4.56's

I only pull 1.40-1.43 60's but then again I do come off the clutch at upwards of 7000rpm.

30 spline 1.506 60' 424 rwhp in a moser 12 bolt with a true trac. running 2 years now, 20,000 miles no prolems. BUt also does whine at cruise and decel, I beleive its just the way the gears are cut. There are 2 types concourse and convex gear cuts, not sure which is louder. My chrysler 9.25 12 bolt has 3.90 in it and it is quiet, but it is also a completey different axle

the 9" is more expensive initially but if you do a gear ratio change the labor is far cheaper and the parts for the 9" so it makes the total investment the same.

I myself like to keep chevy parts in my chevy, but another + for the ford 9 inch is that it has 3 pinion bearings, the 3rd being a smaller roller on the end of the pinion that adds a lot of support. I gotta give it to ford for building an awesome rearend, but it think part of the reason they stopped making them is due to the hp and tq drain of it and the strict mpg requirements of today.

Strange 12 bolt with 4.10's, Eaton HD posi unit, 33 spline axles, upgraded support cover, and 1350 yoke. It's been going strong for 5-6 years/20,000 miles with zero breakage. It was behind a 6 speed until last year and pulled tons of 1.6 sixty foot times, and now 1.5's with the auto. I have a little oil seepage around the pinion and left wheel seal(just enough to leave a film) but it's been good to me. It was however born and is to this day a whiny little bitch.
