Default Foam in the tank?

I am curious. I just bought a tank that is rated at 16 gal. It has foam in it and my question is, Does the foam lower the capacity at all? My guess is yes but by a tiny bit that you can't hardly measure. This is simple a question of curiosity. I don't need a ton of capacity so foam is staying in for all it does for sloshing.

.

I have a 2 gal cell, and it takes 2 gals. I doubt you will miss much if any, even at that size.

the foam definitely lowers the capacity of the tank, after all it is in there taking up volume. is this a noticeable amount of volume? no.

That is the conclusion my friends and I came too. But I was curious as to the real answer. Thanks for the info.

I'd rip the foam out of the tank. I know what it's purpose is... but that stuff will deteriorate and will get in your fuel system, clogging up the filter, messing with the pump if the filter isn't before it, etc.

Does anyone agree with taking it out? Everyone I have asked about foam in the tank say do it so the fuel doesn't slosh. I have heard of it falling apart but only with alcohol I thought. Anyone have problems with there foam?

I trust in what JL says. So when it comes time for me to buy his tank, I wont need to worry lol.

I've seen a couple people have issues with the foam deteriorate yes.

Simple way to not be concerned with the sloshing, is don't allow the tank to get more then 1/2 way down/empty. Example, I'm planning on putting a 3 gallon jaz promod fuel cell in the nose of my car. It has the foam in it. I will yank that right out before it ever sees fuel, and I will top it off after each run, or every other run depending on the fuel comsumption.

If I could get a solid # on the amount of fuel a bottom 8 second car will consume (gas not alcohol) I'd opt for an even smaller tank, possibly a 2 gallon.

Way I see it with a drag car, if you are going to burn a gallon in a run say, I see no reason to carry more then 2. This way you have plenty if you get stuck in the lanes/have to idle the car a bit or something, and the less fuel you carry, the less there is to burn should you have a fitting leak or a fire break out. Less weight too.

Being a 16 gallon tank I assume you plan to use this for street driving with pump gas? If so then you will most likely be running a 10% alcohol/gasoline mixture. I would keep a close eye on it if you decide to leave it in.

It mostly is driven to and from the track, but yes it gets driven on the street on a rare occasion. I run premium fuel and race fuel at the track for the nitrous. If I am correct premium has no ethanol in it. I will keep an eye on the foam and filter, but i think I will leave it in. Being a 16 gallon it might be half full at the track and often less. So the foam will help me out. Are there any problems running a filter in front of a walbro 255?

I don't like running filters before the pump... but there's plenty of people that do it.

I don't know where you live, but the ethanol is in ALL the gas, even premium. Unless you're on a strict race gas only fuel regiment, I wouldn't leave the foam in.

Or, just put an 8 gallon cell in the truck, so if you leave it 1/2 full like I suggested it won't be that much weight, and just put 2 5 gallon gas cans in the bed for the ride to and from the track, if 8 gallons won't get you there. Street driving it too, just leave a 5 gallon can in the back of the truck. Strap it in the corner of the bed, good to go.
