Default Radiator Cap?

What is the legal required radiator cap pressure?
Stock is 16lbs, but i think 19lbs is required. Is that correct?

I have never been questions on the rating of my Rad. Cap. They make sure it does not fall off by grabbing at it at the tech lanes. Also that the car has a overflow equipped.

I always ran a 20 lb cap, or whatever the one is that I bought at the local auto parts store. I just told the guy I needed one with mroe pressure then the stock one, and the kid behind the counter got me one.

I've never had anyone ask, I've had them ask where the overflow was when they couldn't see it in the engine bay, and I had to show them that it was back where the spare tire usually is... every tech guy that saw it always liked that (stops the overflow from puking water on the tires, in the event that it blows up)

As for a rule, there probably is one, what it is though I can't say, rulebook is @ home.

i believe there is a section titled cooling in the rule book. and if i recall, it states to the effect you must have an overflow.

so if you put a 20 lb cap on your cooling system, how much pressure does it take to blow past the valve on the cap?

the stock overflow would be tough to point out w/o taking the front end of the car apart. interesting system. the overflow is actuall below the level of the radiator cap. I imagine vacum sucks the coolant uphill back into the radiator after it cools.

Stock cap is 16lbs. When the system pressure exceeds 16lbs it relieves pressure into the overflow reservoir tank. When the system cool down it will suck the coolant back into the system.
