Default So close but yet so far!

I put a vig 2800 in my car. My best before the vig was 8.19 in the 1/8. I have done that several times and I have run a ton of 8.2's. All of those times were run with a lid and a cutout on F1's. They were also all run in the cold weather. Now that summer is in full swing I can only run 8.4's at best and mostly 8.5's. Now to the vig. Last night was the first time I have ever driven a car with a stall. I was hoping for 7.9's but I came up short. My best run was a 8.02 with a 60' of 1.77 my second best was 8.05 with a 60' of 1.76 Man I wanted a 7 so bad!! My mods now are SLP y-pipe, nitto's, G2 lid, and a cutout. I was leaving at idle. Anything higher I could not get traction. I think since I have put the y-pipe on my car is running rich. Do you guys have any ideas on how I can get into the 7's?
Thanks, Larry

"Tires" will help you into the 7's.

I remember when all I wanted to do was get into the 7's. Now it all about getting into the 6's.

Best of luck to ya.

Larry,

I know were Morgan Point is. Nice place.

About your tires. I would think that a Et Streets would be ok but, Slicks is the way to go if you are going to Drag race at the track alot. IMO.

From what I can tell about the guys at the track that race with autos they stall the car up on the convert and when they see the 3 yellow light the let off the brake and floor the gas.

I hope this helps you out. Sorry about being home sick. I have been there and done that.

Later,
Coach

It sounds like the car is running well in the heat. For tires, were you still running the F1's on your 1.77 60' passes? If so, that's AWESOME to cut that kind of 60' on a true radial! I think you should try a set of BFG drag radials. They won't kill any of your gearing, and they're the stickiest radial you're going to find. I pulled consistent 1.65 60' times on these tires in my '98 T/A. I've had 4 different Vig converters and 5 Yanks, so I have some experience w/ launching both. The Vig converters like to be flashed for the best 60'. I would usually stall them up to around 1,000 RPM for the best 60'. The Yanks are different; they like to be stalled up more to net a nice 60'. I'm currently running the Yank PT4400, and it has shown the best 60' times for me when leaving at 2,200 RPM.

Have you done any of the free mods? The free ram air was worth .1 for me last Thursday in the summer heat! I ran an 11.96 @ 111 w/ it blocked and an 11.85 @ 112.xx with it working. Have you done any weight reduction? The spare tire and jack weigh in at close to 40#, so there's around .04 for ya. Skinnies will net you around .1 in the 1/4 as well, so you could plan on .05-.07 in the 1/8th.

If it were me, I'd start with a set of BFG DR's and the free mods, and see where that puts you. Any weight reduction that you can do will also help out. The general rule of thumb is .1 for every 100#.

I ran those 60' with the nitto's. Anything above an idle and the tires would spin. I had the air at about 15 lbs. Yes I have done the free ram air but that is my only free mod. I am not sure if I can do the trottle body mod on a 2001. I have removed the jack and spare tire. I weighed my car and it was 3640 with out me. I weigh 280 so if I were to let my buddy (180 lbs) drive I am sure he could get a 7,but I want to be the one to get it. I just bought the nitto's and I sure don't want to spend more money on tires. My wife will kill me! I thought nitto's would be good for my mod's. What kind of 1/4 mile time would a 8.02 at 87 mph be? I was very happy with my times last night but when you get so close to a 7 and don't get it it just kills you!

Larry,

An 8.02 works out to be around 12.58 to 12.60 1/4 mile Et.

I got this info from NHRA's National Dragster.

The seven mark is within your grasph. Watch the weather and run at the track when the weather is cool and let your car cool down. Chances are, you will run in the seven. Excellent strategy. Try it and see. Cheers.

Hey Coach my parents live in Morgans Point on lake Belton. I moved to SC a little over a year ago from Texas. I saw your home was in Kileen and it brouht back alot of memories, homesick I guess. I have nitto's do you really think I need to step up to something like ET streets? Is it better to leave from idle or should I stall up the converter, assuming I have traction.
Thanks, Larry
