Default (MMRA) Colonel's Z28 a street car again? Neat!

I've been getting it ready for the MMRA event that is to be held this weekend in Montgomery, AL. www.MMRacers.com The rules state that you must have a full interior (mine was completely gutted except for the dash), both front seats (I only had a plastic driver's seat), mufflers (I had none), a driveshaft loop (I wasn't running one because I don't feel it necessary when a C/F shaft is used.)

The interior is all back in except for the rear seats and seatbelts which aren't required. Yep, headliner, glove box, radio, every last little plastic trim piece, etc... We installed lightweight carpet. Doesn't fit as well as the factory stuff but it sure beats bare metal! Looks like a real street car again. A pair of bullet mufflers take some of the bark out of the exhaust. I think I'll leave it this way from now on. No more theft recovery racing for me.

How much weight did it add back? I haven't weighed it yet but I expect only about 100 lbs. Not nearly enough to get me up to the required 3200 lb raceweight. I'll have to start bolting down some lead to get there. My raceweight was about 2900 before (it was 2985 when I ran the 9.82.) I'm guessing 3000 lbs now so that leaves me with 200 lbs to come up with. Damn I HATE purposely anchoring a fast car down (defeats all the hard work and $$$ it took to get the car so light to begin with) but oh well....ya gotta do whatcha gotta do to run.

Hope to see ya'll in Montgomery this weekend!

Boy, I can relate to adding weight. I have to add 200 lbs to my car for all the NMRA events. It will be nice not having to put it in for this race.

I'm just about ready...got my C-Locker in (essentially a Detroit Locker with provisions for C-clips), and will be dismounting my DR's and mounting my slicks tomorrow.

Should be fun.

BTW...I highly advise running a DS loop regardless of the driveshaft. I have heard a few instances of CF DS coming apart. Worse, if a front u-joint failed, you could pole-vault the car (not good).

Not trying to preach....just thinking out loud.

I'm certainly not suggesting that C/F shafts are failproof. I'm saying that when they fail they basically disintegrate
into thread. ...And they can't take a side load. Yes, I suppose a loop would still be safer than not having one with a C/F shaft (or might it serve only to prevent or slow down the much desired shredding of the C/F shaft?) but a C/F certainly minimizes the dangers of not running a loop.

From ACPT's site...

"ACPT carbon fiber driveshafts provide a special measure of extra safety. Despite safety hardware like shaft hoops and covers, a broken metal driveshaft can become a flailing bludgeon that beats up everything in its' path; severe injuries to the driver, extreme damage to the car, and even vaulting the car into the air can be the result. Carbon fiber minimizes these dire consequences.

Carbon fiber driveshafts are built for strength primarily to transfer torque and can be broken with a hard blow from the side. The result is that when a u-joint or yoke fails the carbon fiber composite begins to disintegrate when it contacts the chassis or driveshaft hoop. As the composite comes apart, the shaft simply turns into a bunch of loose carbon fibers. much like the end of a broom . In fact, in composite technology this failsafe state is called "brooming". Instead of tearing up the driver and shredding the chassis, the carbon fiber broom will probably just polish dirt and paint off the chassis."

Stephen, when you come to Houston, leave the car in that trim. Come a week early with the car running and we can have some fun on the streets/HRP with it, then give it to MTI for the work. My parking garage has TONS of space for a car on a trailer, don't ask me how I know LOL

Hmmm....I've never thought about the disinegration part. Certainly a consideration, and I appreciate the info.

I disagree with ACPTs 'bludgening' comment. A proper DS loop completely encircles the front of the DS, keeping it from hitting much of anything except the loop. Sounds like someone trying to sell more of their product.

Steve, I would love to meet you. Let Tony, DJ, Josh & Mike, and myself know when you will be coming to town. Like Tony said, we can take you to some really good street racing spots. No one will suspect your car around here. When are you planning on coming to H-town?

Given how easily mine broke, I am now kind of leery of them. It didn't even take ten passes at the track, with a best 60 foot of about 1.55. Yuck.

mmiller, I'll let everyone know when I'm coming to Houston. Keep an eye out in the lounge.

WeatherGuy, like steel shafts, C/F shafts come in a WIIIIIIIIIDE range of assortments all the way from what I would consider stock replacement type stuff all the way to the practically unbreakable shafts like the one I run. Mark Williams tells me that they have alot of people running this shaft behind 1200+HP cars and have NEVER had a failure. This particular ACPT shaft that Mark Williams sells is their strongest shaft. They admit that it's stronger than any metal matrix or steel shaft that they themselves make. You should see it. It's FAT!

Adding weight back to the car doesn't necessarily mean that the car will be slower. When cars are scaled and weight is added in the correct areas, the cars will perform better and be faster.

^^^^SIG violation^^^^

BTW -I 'll take a lighter car, than one with in all the 'right' spots.
If your hooking, weight transfer isn't that important.
Just my opinion.

It was a top-of-the-line ACPT driveshaft, so I was a little surprised to have that happen.

It is now repaired and for sale cheap since I can't use it anymore anyway (with the new trans I have). Maybe I can be convinved to go back that way sometime in the future. Might be worth 0.02 in the 1/4
