Default Please vote on what gears I should swap in instead of my 3.73's, 4.10 or 4.30??

Help me out guys!! I'm undergeared! I have 3.73 gears, and need to gear up some more. I'm only crossing the traps at about 5600rpm's, but I make peak power at 6400rpm's, and make good power all the way to 7000rpms.

**I run 26.2" ET Streets at the track BTW**

If I add 4.10s I cross the traps at 6100rpms, and If I add 4.30s I cross the traps at 6400rpms.

I have the TR 230/224 cam which makes no power until 4500+rpms, so I'm not worried about too much gear down low (is there such a thing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> ? ).

I'm going to lose gas mileage, and I accept that. Also, I do a lot of street racing, and being able to hold out 4th gear till 143mph w/ my 3.73's is a big bonus!

I have no problem hooking up with drag radials (which are my daily driving tires) as it stands, but don't want to spin all the way through 3rd gear on the street if I'm overgeared.

I don't go to the track that often, probably no more than twice a month. I rarely race above 120mph on the street, so 4.30's wouldn't hurt that bad.

This is my daily driver BTW, with about 30 miles of mixed hwy/cty driving each day minimum.

So what do you all think? 4.10s or 4.30s?

Verbs, if I could reach all the way down to AZ I would slap you long distance upside the head <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

The worst thing you can do is to try and modify your car "by committee"! You really need to understand your objectives and base your decision on this.

I'll give you my .02......with the power you have, it certainly isn't very impressive unless you have the track numbers to back them up. With 4.10's and your 26" street drag radials you should be going through the traps at about 118+ with 4.10's and this will equate to about 6400RPM. You have enough power to blow past people in 5th at 140+ so this should be an issue with 4.10's.

With 4.30's you run the risk of going past your top RPM at the lights in the 1/4 mile and having to shift to 5th.

GO 4.10's!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to disagree with JohnB, go with 4.30's. Better yet, call Thunder and I bet they tell you the same thing. With 26" tires your car would be turning 6700-6800 rpm at 124-125 mph. That mph should get you thru the lights without shifting to 5th. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> I'm changing my car to 4.30's. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

I would go with the 4:30/26" ET Drag combo if you can. Even with Nittos, 4:30s would be my choice.

You want to cross a few hundred RPMs past peak power, especially since the TR230 carries out very well past peak hp on the top end. I feel the 4:30s will keep you in your powerband the longest.

The ultimate combo is 4.56 and a 28 inch tire. Will hook more consistently on marginal tracks than the 4.30/26 inch combo. If you need to have a 26 inch slick go 4.30s <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I agree with Jason and Chris. 4.30s with a 26" tire and 4.56s with a 28" tire. More gear, more better. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

verbs, get some 15" rims and mount a 26x10.5x15 ET Drag. I used to run the same ET Street you are and there is absolutely no comparison between them. The 15" ET Drag hooked much better. The best mod you can do for traction is tires. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I ran this combo with my solid roller and 4.30s. If you are looking for the ultimate tire/gear for that setup, the 4.56/28" is very hard to beat.

If you REALLY do most your racing on the street, stick with the 3.73's. They have very little "loss" compared to 4 series gears. Your top speed will be the best out of your choices, and if your car can actually go around a corner, they are better for AutoX and RR.

For all out drag? 4.56. Half measures avail us nothing.

Unfortunately I don't have much of an option IMO.

Wouldn't the 4.30's only hurt after speeds of 125+ when I'd have to shift into 5th gear?

Hey Chris,
I am totally new to all of this, I currently have a 2001 TA, M6, heads, cam, headers, y-pipe, pulleys, double row timing gear. I am making 431 rwhp and 417 rw tourque.

I will be getting a mcloud clutch, pro 5.0 shifter next month.

My question is do I have enough power to justify the 4.56 rear end? I will be getting a moser in february and was thinking 4.10's. Just so you know , i do drive the car daily, weather permitting. (I do have a new truck as my other vehicle) Also my plan is to replace current engine in a year with a 422 stroker (hoping for 500rwhp) Raging Motorsports built my current engine and will build my new one. My goal is to have 500 rwhp NA that I can still use as a daily driver. so I dont want to get a rear end that i might have to upgrade in a year.

thanks for any input.

4.10's , you dont' want to lose your top end do you? plus its right in the peak power band.
