Default What gains with converter lock-up switch

Guys, when I went to 3.73 gears and pt-4400 I lost 1.5-2 mph but gained ET.At the top end when I go through in 3rd it felt flat,so I tried pulling the 3-4 shift back -3 and it seemed to help some.My question is would it help to install a lock-up switch to lock the converter at the top of 3rd gear to help it pull through in 3rd.Advise and opinions needed !! I am running a 26/11.50 ET street.I am trying to gain the MPH back

Could be the famous torque management. I dont think you can really gain MPH back that easy. The gears and stall are for a nice 60 ft so it will be hard to MPH. Just look at it this way. All that matters is who crosses the finish line first, not how fast they cross it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Sited12,thanks for the response.I have TM deleted,so I do not beleive that is the problem.Could it be the stock cam falling off the power band,it's going thru at about 6150-6200 in 3rd? I'm thinking a cam would help solve this problem by giving me more of a RPM range to work with?
Does anyone else have some comments or opinions on this situation?

For a stock motor it is supposed to shift at 6100 RPMs so that might be part of it. Maybe drop the shifts down 1000 RPMs and see what happens.

Sited12 like I said going thru the traps in 3rd gear 6150-6200,thats why I pulled the 3-4 shift back.I am trying to find a way aroynd doing that.

JS...It sounds like it is working for you! When my converter shifts it only drops back to 5650-5675.So I was thinking if I could lock the conveter in the top of 3rd it would help it pull through the traps without going flat. Thanks for the input!
Any body else ?

Back about four years ago, I had H/C/PI3600/3.70...

Was going 11.75@112mph I locked up the verter ~5500 and went 11.76@114-115mph.

Try locking it up around 5500 and if the motor lugs too much try it higher.

Check your timing and stuff I think you should be hitting 112-113mph with that great converter unless your car is heavy or something.

Pro Stock John, the car weighed # 3490,with me , at that time. With the 3500 stall I would trap 112-113.5,but I was also #50 lighter!

I really don't think that 50# is going to make a big difference in trap speed. Only worth about .05 in the quarter. Rule of thumb is .1 for every 100# saved. The stock cam is going to make more low end power. I think the problem is you are above the peak power instead of in it. A cam should help out a lot. Change the cam, raise the rev limiter and up your shift points to 6400 or so and it should suite your converter a lot better and take better advantage of the high stall and shift extensions.
