Track temp can affect where you line up after burnout, how you do the burnout (length and time), etc. I usually do less burnout during the summer when the track temp is higher than in fall/spring when track temps are cooler.

so, the cooler the track temp, the hotter you want the tire, or it just takes less time to heat the tire to a certain temp on a hotter track?

I always thought you wanted tire and track temp to be as close as possible.

Sometimes less burnout is required when warmer due to a warmer temp for the tire from the ground temp and sun.

I'm not exactly sure about same track and tire temps but have heard and seen many racers do the exact same deal where track is cooler = more burnout versus track is hotter = less burnout.

I'm with Derek as to reasons they do it...

i also know it's used for tracking purposes. Keep a log of what adjustments at what temp with how long of burnout, etc... helps keep alot of guys consistant

i read in a chassis book once about measuring the tire's temp in 3 places across the tread of the tire to see if the tire pressure is optimum, but that was something done at the end of the run. just wanting to learn the science at the starting line.
