Default The fastest people have gone with an A4 tranny?

I currently have a MVB 700R4 in my Firebird... it worked great last year running countless 11.0's on motor and several 10 second spray passes... I am about to install a bigger motor in the car (going from 385CI to 427CI LS7 style) and was wondering if I should take out the A4 and go with a non OD tranny? Has anyone out there been able to run consistant 9's with a 700R4 or 4L60E? My tranny guy is outstanding and will make sure my car is always up and running, but I don't want to be faced with pulling out the tranny on a regular basis... As an FYI, the car will be just under 3000lbs and should make ~550RWHP through the locked converter... I will be hitting it with a TNT ring kit from time to time, but plan on running on the motor most of the time...

I went consistant 10.8Xs, no problem. Car was cam only, N/A. I know a few guys in the 9s on small shots of nitrous that have never had a problem. It is all in who builds it. If you wanna stick with the 4l60e, Talk to Vince & Chuck at FLT.

I gave up on trying to be fast with a manual tranny. My car is at the tranny shop being converted over to a TH400 with a transbrake!

Fastest F-Body might be Cablebandit at like a 10.1 or something.

Fastest Y-Body would be StealthC5 running a spectacular 9.4. But I'm not sure if he was going through transmissions.

My car already went 10.2's last year with my old combo... so with 150 more RWHP and 200lbs less weight, I am hoping to go faster... I just had the tranny inspected by my local builder and it was mint... he just replaced the band to be safe... I cracked the bellhousing last year, so I managed to get one of the 20 JW Ultra Bell's they made... we'll see what these trannies are capable of handling!

My car has a 4l60e and has went 9.80 on a poor pass the car is set up to run 1/8 mile due to are local track is 1/8 and the 1/4 is over 100 miles away but the car will 60ft low 1.30's on are 9.80 pass it was a high 1.40 and the n20 was under 10.1 and hit the limmiter at about 1200 feet, 1/8 mile time was 6.28 i believe, I went 6.022 1/8 on a mid 1.50 60ft so i would say the next time we go to the 1/4 it should click somewhere around the 9.30 mark.

The biggest failure i have had with this trans is 1 snaped out put shaft.

+1 for chevpower - seen the car. its incredible. 4L60e can be built to run 9s in a heavy street car. its just the builder. NOT the parts

The problem i have with the 4l60e is the cost.. Im sure you can build one to handle the abuse, but look at what it will cost.. for the dollar i just dont think its the most reliable tranny on the street for the track..

Best part about it is the overdrive. Yeah, you can throw the gear vendors unit on a 350 or 400, but it will cost more in the end than a built 4l60e.

Yeah it all depends on how much street use it gets or how much you care about fuel use. An A3 can cost a ton too to make it lock up and then th mentioned GV unit.

Just as gator said above its not all about the parts its how it is built. It doesnt cost know more to build one than any other transmission in my book, If your goals are high 9's low 10's a 4l60e built by the right person can do that reliably

Yeah, but they sure are fun.

I'm running a nice 4l60e and LOVE IT, but of course I'm only going 12.0s.

Yeah I was going to have a 4l60 built for my GTO but then I realized that is would be more of a pite to get an A4 into a manual car due to PCM issues as well as lots of other stuff. My car is just waiting on the custom carbon fiber DS to come in and I should have it back on the road by the end of next week or early the week after!
