Any helmet that meets the SNELL M85, M90, M95, SA85, SA90, SA95 or K98 specifications you are good to go with. HJC helmets are economical and provide the minimum specs to be legal. Arai and Griffin helmets are big $$. -Mark

I use a helmet that the snell rating is M2000. I've had it for about 4yrs and found out after I bought it, it was a motorcyle racing helmet. So if a cycle racer uses it I guess it safe enough to use in a car. It did meet both DOT and SMF standards at the time. Although it may be outdated.
Geezer- All helmets that are for sale are required to meet the DOT safety standards while some are tested by SMF and are given a safety rating that exceeds the DOT's. SMF's tests include impact severity (using anvils), postional stability, dynamic retention, penetration, and flame resistance test. As long as the helmet meets or exceeds the SMF and DOT standards it's safe to use regardless of price. -Mark
