Ever broke a stock 10 bolt w/ stock stall and sticky tires?
I was gonna throw some ET Streets on the wifes car to see what it does. But from watching videos of M6's cars on here and doing searches for 9" and 12 bolts I'm starting to get gun shy about doing it. Her car doesn't make much power 300-310rwhp. Am I risking it? Thanks. -Mark
EDIT: it has 3.42's

10 bolts behind a A4 usually last a little longer. I 've got a whole season on mine, and still have no problems. When the car was stock with a set of ET Streets it slowed the car down. I did put a girdle on the rear end to give it somewhat a chance of living. See mods in my sig for the Trans Am.
When I leave off idle the car will 60 foot mid 1.70's
Stalling it up as high as it will go (about 3400 rpms) 60 foot is high 1.60's to low 1.70's.
60 foot times
Four high 1.60's
Dozen low 1.70's
Too many to count 1.80's and slower
And still no noises or problems yet.

So a rear girdle huh? I'll have to pick up one. Don't know where to shop for bargain prices for the LS1... any good places?
Crawlin- you said you slowed down? Can you explain? Thanks. -Mark

My 10 bolt has seen numerous 1.7s and now is taking high 1.6 60s.
I'm going to put a rear girdle on as well to try and help the life. Thunder racing has a decent price on them, and I think PFYC carries an SLP girdle.

My Brother put a season on the 17 spline dropout 10 bolt in his 56 Chevy with Et Streets with 3800 stall. Those are notoriously weak under abuse, but he has not broken his. I broke the snot out of that type of rear end with my manual transmission, but the auto doesnt seem to be so hard on them. From my experience, the results of slicks on a stock car with a stock converter seem to be a bog off the line. Be sure NOT to use tires with a larger diameter than stock or the condition will worsen. This is due to taller tires having the effect of reducing the gear ratio. Go wider instead if anything.
Should be fun.

i been 1.5x as long as it has stock gears its alomst indestructable with d/r...coulple guys areound here with 3.23 and 3.42 cars are doing low 1.4x, most people you hear about breaking them either have gears, or are dumping the clutch with too much clack in the drivetrain...

girdle that bad boy!! My buddy has a '02 TA on a 10 bolt with a girdle also. Launched it and broke a axle but everything was still held toghter with the girdle, gears were still perfect (4.10's). I think with moser axles and a girdle and a 10 bolt should hold up pretty good with a auto.

But now street tires are not even a choice for the track since I put the converter and exhaust in.

Does anyone know how much a girdle actually improves strength?
I dont know if there are any numbers out that would have a percentage increase in strength over stock...but if there are I would LOVE to see them.
And what about the TA girdle over the SLP girdle? I think SLP is cheaper....strength differences?

But I have to admit I would launch hard every time just waiting to be trailered home.

Bitemark46, to answer your question, the street tires with the same OD will spin and give you artificially lower "feeling" rear gears and allow your engine to turn rpm where it actually makes more torque, but wheelspin is seldome consistant. When you put hard gripping slicks on a stock car without a good converter the bogging effect is really that since the tires will not spin, you lug the engine at an rpm where it makes less torque and has less inertia. That is why people with the slicks use a looser converter and lower rear gears to allow the engine to hit the rpms where it makes good power. I know it sounds a little hard to beleive at first, but it's true if you think about it. Guys with manual transmissions will actually want the slicks to spin 1 to 1 1/2 rotation on launch for this reason. In a locked up drivetrain, something has to slip for the first 30 feet or so. Tires, clutch, both...
