Default question on 317 heads

Is there any certain year to buy? I have a line on 2 sets. Are there different models for different years, one better then the other to use?

Aren't the older ones iron? Not sure if those are 317' or not though, probably a different casting number.

I think you want the most recent ones you can find...as long as they're 317 casting number and aluminum, they should be what you want. I think I heard a rumor at one time or another the later 'version' ones were redesigned to match the LS6 head port design.

317 is the cylinder head casting number. You can use an LS6 intake manifold with these heads. I was referring to the 317 cylinder heads being a similar port design to that of the LS6 cylinder head, which is why the 317 heads are a cheap 'bang for your buck' head used on many forced induction motors. They not only decrease compression due to their larger combustion chambers, they flow very well too for a factory GM casting.

The 317 heads with the "triangles" on the casting of the exhaust port side are the better ones....They are the same casting as the LS6 head with larger chambers. 71.4cc to be exact

The 317's and 243's are the same ports, just different combustion chamber sizes.
