Default Head for boost.

Since I have to get new heads, what is a good factory style for head for boost. nothing over $1500.00. I have patriot gold springs and stainless valves that can be swaped.

I have heard alot about deck thickness, lifting and sealing. I have studs and will continue to use MLS gaskets of some sort. 18 to 20 lb boost at most. will stay around 14 most of the time. 6.0 iron block .030 over. I want to get this thing going again, but for good.

thanks.

For the higher boost levels you're better off with a thick deck such as what the AFR heads offer, although they're more money than what you want to spend. Bob

317 heads fit your budget, have a decent chamber for boost & flow on par with 243 heads. Those can be had on the cheap. Not sure how they do above 16lbs though. Granted you have studs but their deck is far from the thickness of aftermarket castings.

I push patriot stg 3 heads to 20 psi Clamping them with arp studs and mls gaskets and copper seal. Been like that for some years, and alot of 180 mph hiway blast.

Thanks guys, that is what I am looking for. Before I bought a set and had them ported, I did not want to put money into a head that would cause issues.

I've never seen the as cast TFS heads but I know they can be bought and are around that price range. Later you could take them off and send them in for the cnc program to be run on them. Not sure if AFR has an assembled as-cast offering but they would likely be just as good. GM also just released the as cast LS7 6 bolt head that may come close which I believe has a thicker deck. That would require a different intake.

I thought about the LS7 or LS3 heads and intake combo. However, I also hear that the LS3 head has a thin deck and is not good for boost???

I'm buying some TFS 220cc as cast heads for my project this spring. You should look into them and take the plunge. They supposedly only make 10rwhp less than the CnC'd version and have a nice thick deck. Speaking with TEA they suggest doing some minor bowl work (under $100 worth of labor) and they are good to go.

I'm doing a 364ci forged iron block with doweled main caps (keeps them from walking around) and a GT88 T6 turbo. I want to make as much power without having head sealing issues. Hopefully that is around 1000rwhp. Going into another 3rd gen RX-7 I have. 2850lbs is the goal and some silly mph/ets for a street car. T56 transmission is the plan.

I was talking about the new aftermarket GMPP LSX head. It might be called an LS7X maybe. Call SDPC and ask them about them. I think I saw a thread that they just got the first batch in. Not sure if that was the CNC ones or not.

317 head is the best budget head for FI. but you can not beat the AFR's 3/4 inch deck
