Default Are the '98 Fbody manifolds the only "weldable" stock manifolds?

I'm looking to invert stock manifolds to mount the wastegates and turbo's up by the valve covers but this might be useful for quite a few people in many applications. I'll be shortening the collector and putting a t3 flange in it's place right after the merge.

I've read that the 1998 F-body exhaust manifolds are stainless and was curious if there were any other stock manifolds off of LS series motors, ie: escalades, vans, 1500's,2500's that could be welded?

Most truck manifolds all seem to be cast iron making them awesome for big boost but not so awesome to work with. C5's and C6's are cast iron I believe.

Any help would be...helpful
Russ

Target boost is 16-18 lbs. Twins

You can weld stainless to cast iron, you just need to use the right rod and technique such as a heating process to preheat the cast.

But yeah, I think the 98's are the only ones not cast iron.

You can weld MILD to cast iron, stainless not so much it will crack to easily

the 99 fbody manifolds are 409 stainless as well identical to the 98's

all the gen3 trucks are cast,
I think the early vettes were steel, but it's pointed down were the fbody motor mounts are. And the gto's, Cadillacs, hhrs are cast as well.

I'm gonna look into this. So '98's AND 1999 Fbody's as well as '97 C5's are stainless steel. Right?

This is exactly what i'm looking for.

Any others? What about TA's or C6 vettes?

I'm looking for a central exiting exhaust collector. I need to see some pics.

Thanks, Russ

97 Vette should get a you center exit flippable, stainless manifold which might provide a decent start to a set of twins if you have a "tall" engine compartment. They do have some EGR tubes on them to deal with. The C6 style manifolds are compact and make a nice flipped manifold as does the CTS-V, but they are cast so you have to build short extensions to adapt from their 2-bolt exit flange to a T3 or T4 style flange.

Here is the early C5 style

and C6 vette

Default E bay

I just saw a pair of 99 corvette manifolds on E Bay for ($45 current bid) if this helps at all? They looks brand new!

Yes! Great info. I've got plenty of room on top of the motor.

I just talked to a buddy about this last night and he has some '98 Fbody stainless manifolds that i'm gonna test fit. If those don't work i'll move to the C5's and C6's. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks a lot

Thanks! I'll watch this one.

Nice looking welds. It'd be slick if it was possible to cut the T3 flange off my turbo's and run vbands on the exhaust housing to the manifold's.

I'll have to call around to a couple local shops to see if they have any experience with cast to mild.

This is great, thanks guys.

I have welded to the cast manifolds with no troubles at all, many, many miles of street abuse.
