383 LT1 SR cam 88mm turbo HD VIDEO part 1
I posted this in the LT1 section. I am building a 383 LT1 with a compstar bottom end, SR cam, trick flow heads and a PT-88 turbo. Here is the first video, I am building the header. Hope you guys like it.

The tubing is mild steel. I was told that I didn't have to back purge unless it was stainless steel. I don't really know. I have never built a turbo system before. I am simply documenting my experience in this project. If there is a problem or a failure it will also be documented and explained. So what's the right way? Are you supposed to back purge all welded pipe?

Backpurging is used by injecting argon(into the tubing at one end with a hole in the other for an exit) which is heavier that air thus displacing it and giving a cleaner more integral weld. I TIG and have never used it. Although I have never done headers just crossovers and down pipes.

There is no reason to backpurge a mild steel weld. It will not become contaminated on the inside as stainless steel will, the mild steel weld will be perfect on the inside also as long as heat control is correct....the same also for stainless.
