1970 Chevelle Tube Chassis Turbo Build
Dear internet,
I thought I would add my build that I'm currently working on. The car is a 1970 Chevelle that I picked up as a roller last summer as platform to upgrade from my mid 10 second 68 Chevelle. I put my sbc in it and ran it at the last race of the season last year. It's on a rectangle tube chassis and currently has an 8.50 legal cage. Rear tires are 32x14.5. It has a 10" engine setback and race weight with a sbc and th350 is 2500lbs.
Now to the more interesting part. I have Zero experience with turbos or fuel injection but I do enjoy crazy fabrication. I bought a long block from the classifeds here with as much of the running setup as I could from the previous owner. I got his turbo, computer, injectors and a few other things. Engine wise I was short an intake and a oil pan.
It's a 5.3L block, 347ci , ported 317s, S480, 96 lb injectors. I've added a vic Jr and an elbow with a 90mm tb on top.
If as I said I'm learning lots as I move along, so if you see something terribly wrong let me know.
Old motor out
New one in for front engine plate mockup
Got some parts, fit the front plate, added the intake and started making headers
I picked up a 14" vertical band saw from home depot and slowed it way down to cut metal. It has been a life save so far.

Figured out where I liked the turbo
Made this thing
Sorry about the dark pictures, aparently i'm a better amateur welder than amateur photographer.
And that about where I'm up to right now. The bolt on electric pump will be gone now in favour of a remote pump.

That's a killer looking Chevelle, I just love the way chassis cars sit. That's some nice fab skills and good job on the headers. Your car should haul *** being how light it is and with that new hairdryer forcing in some induction. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Videos we saw of it in the previous owners syclone it went 10.95 on 15 lbs and pump gas. I should be around 1200 lbs lighter and running C16, I'm thinking mid to high 9s will be the starting point
I had written down it was a S480 but measured it today as 75mm so it must be a S475
We'll see what it looks like after it's dynoed, but proably 20 will be the most it ever sees. I'll be starting pretty low I assume.
It's a 3.095" bored 5.3 Block, Diamond pistons, Compstar rods, stock crank

Got some parts last week
Got my wastegate, as a result of thinking I had more room than I did I put it on straight when I should have used a 90 to gain a few inches.
Welded my bung onto the timing cover and gasketed up my water adapters

Ahhh, gotta love the Old School Muscle Cars, especially the Chevelle... Beautiful car. Everything looks good so far. Keep up the good work and be sure to post plenty of pics for us "not so fortunate" guys that don't have the funds or resources to do something like this lol
