5.3 turbo with room to grow?
Im selling my MP T70 to finish up my longblock, but looking around I see a lot of large frame turbos being used on builds. When i go back to buy another turbo what would be a good option? A 76 or something else? I am on a budget. The overall layout is the 5.3/T56, 3.73s, worked over 241s, head studs, and an LS6 cam or a TU1. Not looking to build a strip setup at all, looking to keep revs down to around 6-6200. I will have room to fit pretty much anything reasonable for a 5.3. Any input is appreciated

With only a 5.3L for spool and being a stick street car, you're going to have to either compromise spool for power or power for spool. If you only want to make ~700-750rwhp, a TC76/78 would be a decent choice. The small turbine will help with spool and they will still make decent power with the smaller cubes you have. A Precision 76 will spool slightly slower but will make a good deal more power... probably in the area of 850rwhp. If you want more than that, look into the large frame turbos. But then spool will start to suffer quite a bit, which sucks on a stick car.

Im doing a single front mount on my 68 Camaro 5.3 and went with a T78 ball bearing turbo 1.15 a/r, bigger turbo but the ball bearing should make up for it with room to grow and not out grow the turbo. I have yet to start the car due to it being a full restore but it should feel good on the street. Its just going to be a fun street car with some weekend drag runs.

Magnum T76 would work and its only 719.99
TC76 is 899
The precision makes great power but alot of folks fail to realize that it has a 75mm turbine wheel which equals LAG on a 5.3
The TC's and the magnums run the 68mm turbine wheel which is way better for a smaller cube setup.

I am doing a 5.3 setup now and since I am also a DSM guy the new thing a lot of them are using is the billet wheel turbos that help spool and airflow. Precision makes a 6765 thats advertised at 900 horsepower w/ a 67mm compressor wheel and 65mm turbine wheel for around a $1000. It should spool decent and still have good top end for that kind of rpms. DSM and evo guys run the 6262 billet on there 2.0 and 2.3 and see full boost before 4500 rpms and take them to over 35 psi. The 6765 should spool pretty well on a 5.3 for the street.

I ran the tc78 on my rx7, great turbo for around 700rwhp on a 5.3, and I currently have a billet precision 76 on my ltd, spool is a little slower with it, but not much difference at all. If you want more than 700rwhp I'd go with the precision, otherwise go with the tc turbo.

Turbo technology is really improving and I would take advantage by getting a modern technology turbo like Precision makes. They have great tech support for picking the right one and unless you want to go above 900 hp or get ball bearing you can pick up a turbo for about an even 1000 dollars. 900 hp was only done by a 76mm turbo a while ago but now it can be done with a 67mm. If you really wanted a 76 they make a 7675 CEA which has the nice billet wheel for around 1400 dollars and is advertised at 1200 hp. It should spool similar to other 76mm turbos but give a lot more power.

any e85 stations near you? running e85 (tuned properly) will yeild more exhaust volume which will aid in spool up. You could also advance the cam a few degrees to aid in spool-up (since you're not looking for high rpm power)

You do have e85 within reason.... http://e85refueling.com/distance.php?page=1 you just need to get a bunch of the larger gas containers like the desert goers use and buy 50 gallons at a time...... So Cal is one of the better e85 locations.

Then why are you wanting to put something like a t76 on your car? If its a daily driver you should get something like a Precision 6262 CEA, 60-1, or t66. The spool will be nice and not laggy but it will still hit really hard. A manual does not load up a turbo like an auto does to help spool and lag is really noticeable because you can't just buy a converter to fix the problem. If its your only ride and is driven every day I would use something that's less likely to break parts often.
