LQ4 Turbo S300 Or TC78?

LQ4 Turbo S300 Or TC78?
I'm trying to pick a turbo for a 6.0. The car is a 1961 Impala with a T56 transmission, 317 heads and an LS9 cam. It's a street car so I'm looking for instant boost with lots of power under the curve and I don't need to make a crazy top end number. I have built a 5.3/T76 and a 4.8/T72 (in other cars) and I have not been happy with spool time on the street.
I like the TC76 and 78 but I'm wondering if an S300SX3-66 might work even better? Way too small? What do the experts think?

you must be really picky if you didnt like the way a t76 spooled on a 5.3 lol. all these turbos with the 65mm & 68mm turbines spool instantly on all these engines. i would do the tc78 with the 68mm turbine and the biggest ar you can get. even thats going to be a small turbo. i had twin 6162's on my lq4 with the tu2 cam and their wasnt any lag. felt just like a big block.

how much boost were you running? if you were making a full 15lbs of boost or so at 3500 thats spooling pretty quick imo. i think someone on here made like 600hp to the crank with on3's 76mm turbo on a lq4. if you dont care about power up top then just run something with a 65mm turbine and big ar.

My stock lq4/317 heads and a tooley spec'd cam with a tc76 spools REALLY fast but with a 4l80e even with a tight converter. Its a .96AR I believe and 3.5 inch downpipe and BB turbo. Boost comes in really quick and easy and thats through a full exhaust. Turbo still has enough steam to bring me to a 10.1 @ 139 spinning off the line so it has potential to make pretty good power. I am thinking about selling it however for a PT 88 so feel free to PM me an offer.

How fast you spool is determined by the combination as a whole. IMO the LS9 cam is very poor at spooling a turbo early. (ran it last year) Also your hotside piping diameter plays a large roll. With a 2" hotside and proper cam I think you could spool up the cheap $650 S475 very quickly.

I pulled the trigger on a used (lightly I hope...) TC78 with a 1.15 A/R. I think I got a great deal, $850 plus shipping for an S475 is just out of my budget for this project right now. The car is a 1961 bubble top Impala, I'll post pictures when there's something cool to look at. Thanks!
