Default Does anyone run two mufflers in series? My truck is so loud.

For the first season, I ran a single 4" Flowmaster 50 series and it got annoying fast. 2500-3k rpm just droned. Over the winter, I changed it to a 4" round Magnaflow. I like it better, it's much better at cruise but still is annoying at acceleration RPMs under load. When I leave the house for work in the morning it just rattles my head in the cab (same as the flowmaster).

I'm debating on putting another Magnaflow inline before my existing one. Current setup is T4, 1.26 a/r S480 and full 4" exhaust all the way to the rear bumper. I plan on adding an electric cutout this year also. Would a second muffler be the way to go? What about a diesel resonator?

If it's too loud, fit more or larger mufflers.

It's as simple as that really.

Right. I'm wondering how common this is and how bad it will hurt my flow. Also, I don't know if a resonator would be a better option or not. I'm not really sure what the difference is.

What length Magnaflow did you use? The longer the muffler the better. If it still has a drone I'd look at something like an MBRP resonator. They have universal 4" ones available on the "cheapie" sites where you get decent deals on mufflers, exhaust tips, or such. If it's just loud you might want to add another muffler.

I us a dual chamber 3 inch inlet, dual 2.5 inch outlet flowmaster.....then on each leg I put some knock off single chamber mufflers. Oh and I have a resonator before the muffler. So I have a total of 4 mufflers/resonator on there, and its the maximum I am willing to deal with for noise. But its also a daily driver.

I've found straight through perforated tube style to reduce noise better than chambered designs.

And the OEM often use more than one muffler, so dont see why you'd see it as odd ?

I've a pair of 9x4" at about 12" long in the middle and a pair of 8x5" at 16" at the rear.

Obviously a dual system but in each line they are of course in series.

If they are of good design then they will have negligible affect on flow.

And if you're using 4", that offers a hell of a lot of flow.

(kidding Stevieturbo)

I agree on this. I am a flowmaster guy through and through as far as I am concerned that is just what a muscle car sounds like.

That said on my turbo build I just threw in a 3.5" dynomax bullet and it is super quiet compared to no muffler at all. I dont really find it to drone at all. Mine is dumped before the axle and I have no interior.

I run a single 4" into a straight through Magnaflow, so I understand what you're going through.
I was going to run one more muffler towards the rear of the car. (2004 GTO)
Either another smaller sized Magnaflow, Corsa or possibly a Bullet type muffler.
For ***** and giggles, I took a used magnaflow muffler that I had and wrapped it to the tailpipe to hear what it would sound like. It actually helped out a Ton while still sounding great. (Don't flame me for the Hokeynesss

I guess I haven't been underneath enough other cars to notice whether or not OEMs use dual mufflers in series, obviously in dual exhaust though.

The case size on my Magnaflow is 20" long. It is awesome at idle and cruising but rattles my head at 4:30am. Looks like I'll be adding another muffler of some sort in front of it in series under cab.

Borla XR-1's under the cab area and then the ones you have now towards the rear or even a large RV muffler if you are going cutouts.

If you're planning on adding a cutout, then your mind is already made up for you. Add what you need to quiet down the exhaust, and put the cutout on for when you need the open dump.

Easy decision... run a factory exhaust or cheap easy single 2.5" crush bent muffler shop special. Add a large OEM muffler. Then a big E-cutout off the downpipe. You save money, weight, space, and can be as quiet or as loud as you'd like. My 8 second car is very quiet when cruising around town. I run a single 2" pipe off my 4" downpipe with a 4" cutout.

The turbo setup on my lexus used a 3" DP, 4" cutout, then plumbed it to the factory exhaust. That consisted of 2 mufflers inline on each tail pipe. It was very quiet with the dump closed.

This is the factory exhaust.

Also FWIW the Hooker MaxFlo single chambers are some of the quietest and best flowing.

I am with ForceFed on this one. In my boosted 300zx I plan on a 4 inch downpipe with 4 inch cutout, and then a single 2.5 exhaust out the back with a couple chamber mufflers. Run that on WG pressure, and when I flip the switch for high boost, the exhaust cutout will open as well.

What brand cutouts are you guys all running? Seems like QTP is the only place that makes a quality unit.

I have a 4in bullet muffler dumped before the trans cross member, overall its not that loud, just resonates like crazy on long hwy trips. On my new setup I'm building 5in out the fender with a badlandz electric cutout, and a single 2.5in all the way out the back with a big muffler.

Great customer service as well. I've run alot of his cutouts and they do have "issues" if you run them any length of time. (i think all do). But he has been great about returns and replacement parts.

Cool I will go with them. 5 year warranty....cant beat that.

The picture of the 4 inch cutout looks like a 3 inch pipe with an expander to mate with the 4 inch cutout. Does it actually come with full 4 inch plumbing through all 3 inlet/outlets?

Similar set up with mine.

I have a 4" to a Hooker Max Flo dumped right before the axle.

It's not loud but will rattle your ear drums at certain RPM's with resonance. Eventually, I'll return to the fabricator and see if he can route it up over the axle and/or add a bullet muffler in there.

Like most in this thread, I like my cars quiet.

Ad a bullet to what you have, it will drastically reduce drone and won't hurt the flow at all.
