Default "Budget" 1000whp tt questions

Hi, I'm about halfway done with my car. My chassis is almost done as is my tt kit. I'm pretty broke. I'm a 21 year old college student and I work full time to support myself. Since you guys know better then anyone how to save some money I figured I could ask where is some places that I can save some money. The goal is at least 1000whp on e85 and a stock bottom end. I'll throw a ljms cam and valvetrain in jt and some Headstuds and rod bolts..I know it won't be "the most reliable" 1000whp but I think that I should be able to make it last a full season.

I need a fuel system. My manifold accepts ls2 style injectors (bosch ev14). Going blow thru is not an option since I'm comfortable with efi and that what I'm sticking with.

I need a computer. I'd like to know the realistic price of hp tuners. From the harness to the ecu. I'm also debating on holley efi and I can build my own Racepak type dash out of a tablet.

Any other little things here and there will be appreciated. If there is anything that I'm forgetting please let me know. I just want to get my car running asap. Thanks guys!

Here's a mod list for the car so you know what I already have.

Hate to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as a 1000hp "budget" build. Ask me, I tried.

The cost of HPTuners is basically the cost of HPTuners. There is no custom harness with HPT. The whole point of it is to use the stock computer and harness.

$649 For HP Tuner Pro. Comes with 8 credits. This was almost every place I looked other than some guy(s) that were getting out of the game before using it.

I'm not on an extreme budget. I'm already 15k in the car. I'd like to save some money if possible and figure out where the best places are to do it and what parts I should buy. For instance, what size injector will I need. I figured about 2000cc. So I proved myself out for some id2000s and they're about $1350. Can I find something that will get me by without going over $1000. How much will a harness and ecu run? I don't have either. I have just a bare 60k mile lq4 long block. If I have to spend 7-800 on a fuel pump I will but if I can get away with a $500 one I would go for that.

The 0400 PCM's are going variously for $70 to $100. The harnesses, you can find Truck or car Harness and repin it. There are various write ups about that. Have you looked and Denmah's pages? He has a lot of cost saving tips in his many write-ups.

I went holley efi for multiple reason 1 being the fact that you can run low imp injectors. My 160s from holley brand new are 550. So thats a huge savings. And you can get into holley efi for like $1400 if you keep your eyes open on the classifieds.

I'm using a stock harness and pcm with hp tuners for my budget build. I will have it dyno tuned on e85 by a very reputable tuner in my area, I believe I'll have between $700 and $900 into it the hp tuner software and the custom tune depending on how long it takes my guy to nail down the tune. I'm shooting for around 700 to 800 whp and am running a magnafuel 4303 which my tuner said he has seen support over 1000 whp on e85. I believe the pump cost $485 Plus rregulator and a crap load of an fittings and -10 and -8 fuel line. I probably have just over $1k into the complete fuel system Which should have no problem supporting 1000 whp on e85 when I decide build the lq4 I've got for it.

Why not just buy an assembled shortblock with forged pistons and rods? I believe TMS sells these for around 2k or so.

That's a LOT of power for a SBE.

I mean, look at the rest of your build. why stop short at a stock short block? doesn't make sense to me. And I can't imagine you're "That" broke considering the cash you've got invested in the chassis.
Good luck either way.

Ebay turbo headers are usually a horrible idea. They are made poorly, too thin, retain heat poorly, and are not sized properly for what you are trying to do. (collectors/runners are too large) Factory LS6 SS manifolds would be my pick. 2.25" pipe to each Gt45.

I’d buy the newish Bosch 210lb hi-z injectors. They are $80 each on ebay.

Then I’d look into an MS3x system which is under $700 with the harness and more than capable of your goals.

Fuel pumps will be an issue at those levels as well. There are no reasonable priced single pumps capable of 1000whp on e85 I’m aware of.

Cheapest route would be 4 255HP ($96ea with An6 fittings) inline pumps (GSL392). 2 pumps plumbed in parallel per injector rail. Each rail having it’s own Fuel pressure regulator. -8 feed to both rails, -6 returns.

Takes about $30 in AN fittings to make a setup like this... so under $500 total.

Good luck!

If you do decide to go the Holley route, plan on spending close to $3k by the time you get the injectors, sensors and extra harnesses you will need. You can save some cash by joining Team Tick as that gives you 25% off of list on Holley and 40% for Russell. It costs $50 to join, but I have saved over $500 compared to Summit's prices.

you are building a fantastic chassis, don't build a grenade engine

here's what I'd do. scrounge up a 4.8/5.3 iron block, they are practically free

I have 3 of them if you need one.

use the short stroke crank, and scrounge up some decent 1k hp rods (350-600)

wiseco or diamond pistons ls9 cam or cheap aftermarket

megasquirt with factory harness, under 1k tested and you can do everything you need to much cheaper

dual 450 pumps 130 ea

run e85 for sure, you might even get away with no intercooler but I'd use one if you run it on the street

I have a built manley rod, wiseco piston 3.82 bore 4.8 engine that will take 1k hp and leave you smiling.

pm me if interested, fresh out of the machine shop and I can deliver it within a couple of hundred miles for gas money

On stock heads, you'd have a little trouble making 1000 to the wheels with no intercooler.

Thanks guys for all of your input. I'm gona go with the hi-z injectors and I'm looking into the ms3. I've also decided to build the engine. I purchased a 4.8 crank and 6.3" eagle rods with l19 rod bolts. The rods are rated for 1400hp. I'm excited to do a destroker. It seems that everyone goes for bigger cubes meanwhile I'm turning my 6.0 into a 5.3. Should work with my turbos a lot better. It's not unbelievably budget by to work at an import shop and I'm a wholesaler for most brands and I got all 8 rods for less then $500. Hell, the rods for my STi were $800; so I'm pretty happy about that. What are most people running for pistons? I heard that I should be looking for something with a 1.3 compression height.

The most common piston for 5.3s that I see referenced are the Wiseco. That's what I have in mine. I don't know that compression height they have off the shelf. I tailored my compression via head choice (PRC Stage 2.5 CNC'd)

Id condsider some better turbos too. All that ebay stuff is going to mess up an otherwise very nice build.

Default LJMS 5.3 piston

Look into the LJMS 5.3 pistons as they have a better ring package for boost.
