Default 383+s480+e85=962whp

Decided to pull the 5.3 and s475 that I ran all summer and put something bigger and bader in my 69 camaro I picked up a new forged ls1 short block stroked to 383 from a member, also got a set of warhawk ls heads from another member, used the same cam that was in the5.3 that I got from brute speed. Reworked the hot side to fit the new s480 t6 cast wheel stock case. switched the computer over to ms3 pro.
Had It on the dyno yesterday. It put down 962whp and 889wtq with 23psi. Next plan is to upgrade shocks and springs and add a 10 point cage. I plan on trying to run a couple of the street car take overs next summer and some of the local king of the streets and small tire races.

I'd be curious to see what it would do with more boost added to it. The problem is keeping the head gaskets in place. lol Bob

Bob- Because of the lack of clamping force from stock size bolt diameter?

With the 4 bolt per cylinder block and head combination, you end up having clamping force problems. Bob

I bet it splits a cylinder sleeve before it lifts the heads. There's like a billion boosted 5.3's pushing noticeably more than 23# without six bolt heads.

Nice numbers! Couple of questions,

1. Is your S480 the standard cover or race cover? Not sure if that is what you meant by stock case.
2. Was this with the wastegate pinned shut?
3. What intake manifold are you using on it?
4. What trans is in the car?
5. Lastly, is your turbo the standard 96mm turbine/1.32 A/R?

Thanks, I am putting together a combo similar to yours, and was curious.

Standard cover s480, cast 96mm wheel and 1.32 housing.

Stock 5.3 truck intake and flipped truck exhaust manifolds.

It's got a powerglide with a 9" out back.

Wastegate is not pinned. I've got an electronic boost controller run by the ms3 pro.

Thanks for the response! Man you are making some good power out of that turbo. Makes me excited for my setup. Which hopefully is back together next weekend. I am really close.

I wonder how much yours would boost with the gate pinned shut? I would think that you are almost there anyways. Check out this thread if you haven't seen it already. They made a little more power than you, but it was at your boost level, and they were pinned shut. It was also thru a glide and 9".

They were also on a race cover.

The gains were starting get pretty minimal when we got above 21psi. I'm probably going to do the race cover, billet wheel and a cam speced specifically for this setup next winter. For the next year in going to focus on getting the chassis dialed in and trying to get this thing into the 8's at over 150mph.

No body said you couldn't push it past 23lbs. It's a well know issue with these motors that the head design is inefficient and like to lift the closer You get to 30lbs. 99% of these 1000hp 5.3 that are actually running on the street and not dyno queens are experienced GM guys who've been at it a while.

They seem like a great bargain. I didn't want to risk more failures so I just went ahead and bought a pair of 4303'sand called it a day.
