Question Questions for all you 1500+ HP guys...

I'm still brainstorming on a few things so I wanted to get some input from people that know more about it.
I want more Cubes than your normal 408, 416 etc. but I don't know how well the cylinder walls would hold up to alot of boost on say a 440 or 454.

So with that, What block are some of you guys running, how many cubes and how much power does your car put out? An ET would be good to

Why do you want more cubes ?

And why not a straightforward and simple LSX ?

And 1501...or 2000..or more ? I'm sure it will make a difference.

If what you're wanting is a Small big block I'd go filled LSX or just billet with no water thru it... if you got the coin

Lsx with good rotating assembly and upgraded valve train will make that all day in a drivable street car with a good twin setup. What are you using it for

I was just thinking, if I go with an LSX block... why not use it to its full potential and get more Cubes out of it.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I haven't seen too many 408, 416 passed 1200 hp or so. I'm sure it's been done they're just few and far between.

Whatever I decide will be going in a 67 Chevelle, I want a "streetable" drag car.
It's going to get backhalved, tubbed and caged.

I just made 1200 on a lsx 387ci with twin 6766s and I'm sure I have another 100 or so left in it. Ran out of fuel pump. I don't see why you couldn't make 1500 with a pair of 76s

Right on... going in a 67, I'd like to go with a 396 LS engine. I don't know how hard it'd be to achieve 1500-2000 HP. I just figured it'd be easier to get with more cubes.

Running more cubes doesn't make it 'easier'. It makes it more expensive and more pump gas friendly at those power levels. Beyond that, it doesn't necessarily make it easier.

You'll have to run more boost, which is almost completely irrelevant anyway. Most people freak out about running more boost. The engine itself doesn't see any additional stress with the increased boost. If a 454 is making 1500 HP and 1500 TQ at 20 PSI, and a similarly built 323 is making 1500 HP and 1000 TQ at 35 PSI, technically the 323 ci at 35 PSI is seeing less stress.

When YOU decide how much air it takes in, displacement begins to become less meaningless.

The car would be more street able with a smaller engine that lets the turbos do the work. Cylinder heads will seal better with more cylinder wall thickness which allows for more boost as well. 4.03 bore and 3.90 stroke LSX will get you the 396 (397) CID, keep the piston beefy and let you run plenty turbo for 1500 rwhp. Shouldn't need to fill it.

If you seriously want 1500hp go with the dart next block over the lsx block. Might as well go bigger. The block, crank, rods and pistons are going to cost the same for a well built 396 or a 427 for that kind of power. Put a pair of 76's on it with good heads and you will get to your goal.

How pump gas friendly would a 396 be? I've also got E85 available in the area so that's also an option.

I would just run the E85 at that point.

There are some stock cube 5.3 guys making way past 4 digits.
You can either build it big and let the cubes do the work, or go smaller and let the fuel and turbos do the work. Up to you. E85 would let you take smaller cubes a lot farther than pump gas would.

I'll most likely go with an aftermarket block and utilize the 6 bolt heads but just out of curiosity... how much would a 6.0 block hold up to if it was filled?

Using it to it's full potential, or pushing it to destruction ?

Big difference.

And a few extra cubes will make negligible difference to power levels at that level. Ultimately whatever power adders you use and engine reliability will be the governing factors.

But trying to extract more cubes from a platform that doesnt really support it, will certainly have a negative impact on reliability.

As for pump gas, just dont get silly with the CR and it can go a very long way.

Op, you may get a better answer to this question on YB or the turbo forums where people are making 1500 HP. Some folks just don't mind spending other people's money for them. In all honesty at the power level you want a big block Chevy will make that all day long without even sweating it. The cost will be less for the big block and as heavy as these ls engines are (especially the aftermarket steel blocks) the big block won't be any heavier. Something to think about.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking.
