Went 10.03 @ 120... no gear left at 1000'... HELP!?!?
Went to Milan last night with my T/A and ran out of gear at the 1000' mark and coasted to a new best of 10.03 @ 120... Some people are tellin me to put a smaller gear in the rear end like a 3.42 or 3.50??? I currently have 3.73s... Others are saying to change the transmisson gears smaller (just first) so i can go out further before i shift... I'm going to get the specs on the TH400 after the holiday... I do know the converter is NOT the problem... It's working fine and locking up... It's a 4000-4400 stall (TCI 10inch race converter)
Im curious to what you procharged or turbo guys run in the rear with a 400 trans? I'm making between 14-16psi of boost with my d1, I shift at around 6500 and the limiter is set at 6800. Now, i know i can raise the limiter to 7200 and be totally safe with the internals - all forged bottom end - w2w ls6 race engine...
ANY and all HELP will be appreciated...

what size tire you running? a change to a bigger tire size might help, what is your max rpm?(sorry did not see that info at first)
there is a number of race calculators here

this may be the most helpful

at 6800 you should be going 152 at 100 percent efficiency. sound to me like the converters to loose. what did the logs show for your max speed? Taller tire, tighter converter or 3.50 rear will fix it. also going from 6800 to 7200 would net you another 9 mph at 100% efficiency

I had a problem with my last converter being too loose... I had TCI custom build me this converter for my setup... I highly doubt it's that... Do you guys think that a 3.50 gear in the rear will get me down the track? or should i be safe and run a 3.42... DTS will take care of me so if i have to swap the gears out twice it's not a big deal... I just want to have a few hundred R's in the bank just incase i spin and what not. I hate cuting it sooo close at the big end...
Change the gear then? To 3.50s

Type F trans fluid in the TH400...
I'd like to think that its not the converter and i highly doubt it is... but i think im gonna start with a change in gears to 3.42 and see where i'm at... What do y'all think?

I wouldn't go changing gears just yet. Heck I ran 122 mph on 3.73 rears and 26.0" tires! I've got my shift light set at 6200 rpm and it never went off, so I was probably running about 5800 rpm or so through the traps.
I really think you have some slippage either in your trans or you converter. Probably you converter.
What was your 60' by the way? (Just curious)

That converter is showing a 17% loss based on the 127mph against Bancroft. If you change the gear you will load the converter harder causing more slip. Call TCI and check your line pressure on the trans.

I'll bet it's still converter realted one way or another, with the RPM and tire/gear size, you shouldn't be hitting it at that mph.
What does the tach jump to when you leave the line, how much RPM does it drop between shifts? I'm guessing that between shifts the tach isn't dropping much at all (converter is still too loose)
Guy I know had the same problem, was running a n/a setup with a 5000 converter, was too loose when he went FI with alot more power, had it restalled to 4000, still too loose, ended up going to a 3800 setup and a differnet company's converter, problem solved. He was running a TCI converter too (mustang, but it's still relative) until en switched to another brand (not sure what, just know he bought a whole new one from someone else) Probably not a TCI problem, just that he needed something alot tighter then he thought.

You say the converter locks up. I didn't think the converter would generally lock under WOT unless somehow programmed in or manually activated. After thinking about it either the stall is too much or a trans. slippage problem. Nice car and nice to meet you yesterday. Once you get it worked out I'll bet you'll be chasing KP down.

I run 4.10's, 28" tire, stock gear th400 (not it matters since it's 1:1 either way in third), and cross the traps around 7000 and that's 140 flat.
Definitly a converter issue or your trans itself is slipping a ton in high gear which is doubtful.
