~LOW budget turbo build~
Has anyone here done a LOW budget turbo set up? If so how much did it cost?
If not how much do you think I could build one for, buying used, off of ebay, classifieds, doing most the work myself. etc etc etc

why does everyone say that? Im tired of hearing that....
Has anyone had a bad experience with a cheap turbo set up when not abusing it??
I have know MANY MANY MANY MANY people who do these cheap build up and have 0 problems what so ever. I mean its basically the same conpept whether you buy TOP OF THE LINE PARTS or whether you buy cheap parts.
I dont understand why people always have to go bashing thos who are trying to save some money...not everyone is made of gold....there are people who actually have to work for a living, they dont get everything handed to them on a silver platter.

where the hell u gonna get cheap ls1 turbo headers that will fit in an F-body? if u make them urself it will take you a hell of alot of time, and time is money..... also if u can strap together a cheap turbo setup on your F-body then u cant boost more then 5-6 psi. beacuse then u need to mod ur engine and driveline, and they dont make cheap heads, cheap cams, cheap valvesprings and cheap axles etc. and even if they do make these cheap parts after u add them together it will be expensive once again. so yes u can make a cheap kit and make 5 psi but thats it, and there a reason people pay 5000+ dollars to get well designed headers and downpipes. and theres also a reason i wrote the "how much forced induction really costs" sticky

silver platter?
If you want to make 380-450rwhp youll be spending at LEAST $1k-2k. And thats for used parts and a simple build, likely no tune and no shop labor. Thats not cheap. Unless your familiar with an LS1 turbo app (likely not in the thread starter's case) its still costly. So I believe the man has a point.
edit: he beat me above. Read the sticky and get an idea of what things cost. Im in the middle of the "budget" build. Heres a sample:
LQ9 heads $400, Springs $100, Pushrods $100, 255 fuel pump $250, inject $300...and this is border line used stuff. Youll break $1k on just support stuff...easy

but see its not really, considering that your not CONSTANTLY pushing out 550rwhp, only under boost, its not like its a continus strain. I understand how you would rather be safe than sorry, dont get me wrong. All im trying to say is that i think it is possible.

I believe those headers are for a SBC. Different shaped ports on an ls1 as far as I know.
Even so, it is still $400 for those. Consider another $400-1k for the turbo depending on application.
my01ws6 keep in mind that people quote $5k because they are referring to a complete build minus maybe a 9" or 12 bolt rear. If the guy is creative in his garage, he will likely be able to pull off a less expensive kit. For the general fbody owner, that is not an option. Some guys cant even install an STS kit due to lack of tools.
I can throw on a 300 shot and make 600+rwhp for less than $3k. The important part is Will it last?
IMO if you want a safe, reliable car expect to spend a lot more than $2k. Remember these are general guidelines. I am sure there is someone out there making 500rwhp from his $1k turbo setup. But factor in a clutch, fuel, possibly tranny, rear end, tires, gears (if theyre already something like 4.10s), and any sort of tuning/extra installation, especially if its a daily driver.

if the majority of guys out there own these cars and CAN NOT put on an STS kit they have some serious issues and dont deserve to drive that car. Like i stated earlier, served on a silver platter.

Im not following you here so I wanted to clarify and then ill leave it up to the guy to search and do what he pleases.
Some people dont have the tools to jack their car up and install a turbo kit, even one as easy as an STS kit. I for one dont have my tool garage with me. Not everyone has access to these things. So, what does a silver platter have to do with it? You believe if they dont have a nice garage of tools that they dont deserve a turbo? Car knowledge varies from one owner to the next. Some guys need a speed shop to help with the labor. That equals $. I believe they are entitled to that. Its just how they spend their money.
edit: I didn't realize you were the post starter. Check out the search and see what the stuff costs. If your interested in doing a rear mount then PM me and ill show you some setups. GL to you either way

Im tired of people telling me the only way to do it is to buy a kit, everyone says custom kits wont work etc etc etc. These are usually coming from guys who have 0 experience with a homemade kit and who are rich and have money to blow. I on the other hand do not. Thats what my point was. The first thing i always hear is your gonna spend more than what a kit cost and to be honest i find that hard to believe.
