Is alky really worth it? Im getting mixed opinions
OK, Im talking about the safety aspect, im not really interested in making more power with it. Well, ive heard that its great as a safety.but now im starting to hear that its over played and isnt worth getting it. Ill be running 10/14psi on my single turbo 355 and im wondering if its worth the 400$

I think it would be worth it too.. You can run the cheap windshield washer fluid through it and it'll definitely allow you to add timing while still being safe...
One problem I'd worry about... Running low or pump failure.

What if your fuel pump fails? Your oil system fails? Your brakes fail? ANYTHING can fail. There are very few occassions this happens with the meth pump. Low probability of it ever happening to you.. good dependable safety!!

I have seen too many meth pumps fail and take out engines, alot more than oil pumps or fuel pumps. Yes it's true, anything can fail but why stack the odds up against you by adding more to the equation. I will stick with 10 psi on pump gas, if I really need more than 680 rwhp than I will put in the good gas and not be a cheap *** to turn it up.

Well I would think we need to look at the reasons for the pump failures. Pumps rebuilds and/or new pumps are not that expensive. I would think doing a rebuild or purchasing a new pump quarterly for those that race a lot or every 6 months for those who do not race a lot. If you know for a fact you are going to race then throw in 2 to 4 gallons of 100 octane for added insurance. If you have a race on the highway every blue moon then keep your meth tank full. I will personally be running meth on my new setup, but rest assured I will have Torco or 100 octane in the tank if I know I am going to race.

Pumps probably fail mostly from underhood exposure, bad wiring and general lack of use.
I'm one of the 'use race gas at the track and put a milder tune in (or turn down the boost) for pump gas on the street' people. I have enough crap on the car that can fail and I dont need one more failure point and one more thing to maintain.

Alky on a racecar is one thing. There are 400cu aluminum blocks making well over 2000 horse on some big twins that don't need to run any sort of an intercooler. They spray alky down it's throat and it cools the intake charge so much it develops a frost on the manifold... Pretty impressive without intercooling. If you've got a "street" car run street gas. If you max out your setup on pump then you've maxed your current setup for "street". Just my opinion, I actually owned a kit personally. Never gave me any problems.

ive had homemade kits using shurflo pumps and i have never had any probs.
even using autozone wiring and switches, fuses, hobb switches etc.
have had one on every fi car ive owned
guess it come downs to wiring and element and heat protection that causes failure and lack of maint.

If you set your tune to 11.1 with alky and it fails it will only lean out to 12.1-so you still have lots of margin. My WBC has a warning light that will go off at 11.5 under full boost over 4500 rpm-if it goes off I let off. IMHO the Alky control/ECS meth kit is one the best mods ever-i love Alky!!!!Can't complain with my #'s on my stock bottom end.

I believe the original post was about using it for additional insurance. If the tune is set up for pump gas and the alky is only for additional insurance against detonation, then it could only help and not hurt if it fails. In his case, after spending thousands of dollars for a FI system, then an extra few hundred for an alky system that can only help and not hurt if it fails is money very well spent. IMHO

Alky is the cheap fix for those to jewish to run race gas to be safe. Adding systems that can fail is just moronic. Make 5 less hp to the wheels and know all you have to do is put 91 in her and not worry about the bandaid failing you.
