Default Nothing mindblowing, but made some clean hits in the Formy

I got up at 5:30AM today, got the Formy, and went to Byron Dragway. I'll skip the little stuff that delayed me, but had some truck trouble and trailer trouble.

Let me say that the car was fun to race and I look forward to next year, I learned a lot today. Made 5 hits:

11.02@122 1.58
10.57@129 1.58
9.86@141 1.54 (hit rev limiter soft on 1-2 shift)
9.82@139 1.55 (botched up the run a bit)

Here is what I learned:
-Car wants to be shifted at 7000 or higher
-2step at 3500 means car leaves super soft and then takes off, I was not leaving on any boost maybe 1 psi
-Car really does not make much power below 4000 rpms
-I need a new laptop (could not bring it to the track and change any of my tune).

I think this 88mm turbo on top of stock cubes and low compression creates a high rpm lag monster. I think I could put the 2step at 4500 and it would probably leave very hard.

Thanks to Larry @ Speed Inc. for helping me out at the track and for doing me a huge favor this morning. Thanks to Mike Kennedy for giving me a ride to the store so I could deal with trailer issue. Jim whatever changes you made to the low rpm tune really helped with spool up on the 2step/brake. Came up to 3500 a lot faster.

I can't wait for next year!

Not bad, how much boost? It showed some good potential on the dyno.

And fwiw when I was playing around with the transbrake it was hitting 10psi boost a few moments after hitting the 2-step. (so you may have been letting go of the button a bit early).

You're probably right about me leaving a little early Jim, but I was on the 2step for at least 2-3 seconds with it popping. Larry was at the the line for the passes so maybe he will chime in tomorrow.

The blower left like a BBC. The turbo is laggy down low but I can see where the car will fly if I put it all together.

Nice John! That's cool you got a few more passes in this season. How was the track hooking?
Your going to have to leave with about 10lbs of boost to get it to 60'. I wish I were at the track one more time! Oh well, We'll have fun next year!!!

Byron was hooking like mad, and there were like 40-50 cars there at the most.

congrats on the new times with the turbo setup.. I agree with the launch rpm needing to go up or getting the boost to climb at the line... once ya do she will hit like the blower did out of the hole and instantly surpass as boost rockets to your gate setting.

I too noticed last weekend the difference between the blower and turbo launch.. the blower was as you stated instant non bogging right from the clutch release (6 speed) while the turbo car jumped fell then came online and romped the rest of the way down the track... I, having the C4 chassis and IRS out back will be grabbing some 300m billet axles and moly half shafts as well as some bracing for the tranny to take some of the torsional load of the dana 44 carrier snout and then will be seeing how the car likes launching off the DFI's two step and a 50 shot.

unlike you unlucky bastards.. NC drag strips are open year round with the exception of christmas and new years holiday weekends.. come down and visit guys! lots of great cold air and well prepped tracks to go around all fall and winter long!

I just have to put it all together, and the car will run strong. I'm just happy to be in the 9's and over 140mph in 6 passes.

that MPH seems a little low for 24psi (on the last two passes) or was it low cause somthing got messed up?
still not bad at all. but is that turbo ideal for your setup?

anyways congrats.

Jonathan, it's all about the launch, and I'm still learning, I'm by no means an expert. But if I were to leave off idle @ 24psi I'd probably run 10.8@130mph. Off the 2step leaving too quick (not building enuff boost like Intmd8 and KP are saying) I went 9.8@141. I don't think I left on any boost at all since the car left soft and then took off.

My guess is that it's a big turbo for my cubes and my compression. I think that just shows how dialed in NMRA Drag Radial cars are that go 8.3 or better with a 85mm turbo.

My guess is that once I start shifting it higher and leave on 10psi the car will start trending down to 8.99.

I'm not going to change a single part on the car until I have maxed out the mph and the et of the current setup.
