Default Iron or Aluminum for me?

I have an iron 6.0l block sitting in my garage right now and had planned on using it for my next motor. More I think about it the more I don’t know. I am looking to boost around 16lbs or so. Will a 98 aluminum block handle that kind of punishment in the long run? I did some searching but was not satisfied. Open to all opinions. Thanks in advance.

imo I believe the aluminum will handle it fine, it's more about what's in the bottom end than the block...I had an iron 402 and went 418 aluminum, I wanted to get the tonnage off the front.... I also spent alot of money on rods, crank and pistons...all told my set-up suppose to be able to handle 1600hp, of which I'm nowhere close...so I think you will be fine with aluminum, but this is my 2 cents...

Jason, do it for the cubes! Either a 370 or 408 will rock with your d1sc! More midrange vs a 347 build. Get some cylinder heads when your doing it and a lager cam. We just pulled a slp 408 motor the other day to around 760hp / 790tq on 16psi.

I would like to try and budget this as best as possible. I think either of those would be great but then the cost really starts getting out of hand. Unless you guys are willing to sponsor me?

I have the LQ4 block for the main reason of the extra strength of iron. I would have gone with a L92 block if they where out when I started my build.

Aluminum blocks have been pushed well past 16psi and 1000whp without issue, I think your fine IMO.

If there was a failure in the motor, IMO Iron would hold up more and stand a better chance of rebuilding. Also you are restricted to the technology employed in the 98 casting, at least with a regular 346 block had oiling ports that were not optimal in the backside of the block, little things like that can make the diff.

I also look at is that you have the block, use what you have.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I am going to keep the iron and build that one.
