Default GT47-85 question

Those of you that are using the larger frame turbo, what are your thoughts on the GT47-85 in an LSX application? What would be ideal cubes, c/r, boost level for this turbo? Will it even work well on an LSx?

Thanks,

It will work pretty well in those applications. The shear size of the GT47 though is why most don't use them and go with the smaller compact S-series.

Thanks. Do you forsee the larger 370-400 inch ls1 choking off as opposed to the smaller mod motor? Its an 85 in a 1.08 housing I believe. Is anyone logging EBP v boost on LSx's with big turbo's?

The reason I'm asking is that I have an opportunity to pickup one new, never used, for about 1/2 retail, from a good friend who decided to use smaller twins instead. He was going to run it on a mod motor mustang.

I don't think Brian or Patrick at PTE would like to see someone run really big boost with that turbo and a big inch engine, Brian is consistently felt that smaller cubes keep the turbo from (a) running two much backpressure and (b) keep the turbo in it's efficient part of the map. What is your goal?

That's a good question. I haven't set goals yet, which is ironic because I always preach to my friends and customers that the most important part of project is setting goals first.

I wonder if that turbo might even work better on a smaller inch LSx motor, such as a 5.3?

Isn't that a turbo that the NMRA drag radial guys would have run up until they increased the maximum size to 88mm? Those guys were going low 8's with like 331ci engines I think.

I think if you want to run 10's I'd run whatever size engine you want, but if you want deep 9's or 8's you should talk to PTE and see what they say so that you are forewarned.

It's exactly that turbo.

I talked with PTE, they said keep CID under 370, that anything between the 5.3l and 6.0l will work great with this turbo.

John they have gone faster then that....... with 50 less cubes.....

Right down there in memphis to be exact.... ive seen the car with my own eyes....
there in Southhaven, MS about 15 min from memphis.
284ci with 4V heads and that turbo on radials. on true stock suspension.
The car was in race pages in Jul 07.
That car has been the quickest 85mm pass @ 8.18 in NMRA trim.
Non NMRA with the 88mm version they have been 7.98 on radials...
Here are a couple vids....
7 sec pass

85mm trim

Id say way less cubes then a 6.0L..... because of back pressure

Yeah the Mustang guys always have the records, they've had a much more competitive scene since they have so many races they can do.

You could just run a 4.030 6 liter block and go from there. You looking for better than 9's?

Most of the faster turbo cars are pretty small cubic inch motors. I know a lot of SSO cars only run 347s and those cars go into the 7's
