Default So how long does a boosted motor last

Had a conversation with a guy the other day about turbo LS1 motors, and he wants to know how long do they last 5k miles or 150k miles. All things being said driving habits, proper build, and care and such. How long has your boosted motor lasted?

Given the propensity to drive the turbo car harder due the turbo/mods I'd say definately less than a NA motor that was grannied... that said it will last no less than an NA motor making the same power and same abuse.

all things being equal its the driver that will make or break it.

Bad build or bad tune is a whole other topic though

my motors stock and im getting close to 2000miles and not always nice to it. but if someone has a built motor they usualy dont run them til they brake unless sothing went wrong with the motor build. i wouldnt want to know how long my 4000+ dollar motor will last so u just freshen it up a lil bearings gaskest ect.. yah know.

I haven't put many miles on my turboed GTO, but my Whippled Silverado has 256k miles. The supercharger was put on at 120k miles.

Way too many variables, with boost level and tune probably being the most important.

I have been running 10 psi of boost since April 2005 on a stock bottom end. I pick my battles wisely and I don't go racing every Paul Walker or Vin Diesel in town at every light. For real racing I use my R1.

Well said, it all depends on the driver's driving habits...

i agree.... if it is a turbo application and you want to to last long, try to not build boost say in 4th gear and start at 2000 rpms that kills engines. I am no expert but that is what i have been told.

i got about 30k on the clock on my engine built nov 05, its comming out this winter to get refreshed.

i'd say i have an average et of 9.70 racing every other weekend since may of this year, probably averaging a 10.70 through 2006 when the formula had this engine and it was an m6.

Depends on how you drive it and how much blood & $$$ you put into it.

Boosted engines can easily last for 100k+

Just look at the GM 3800 supercharged, mustang cobra, subaru STI... etc

for reference though, KP would change his oil every few runs. I'm sure MM changed his oil frequently too.

Rings wear much faster than a n/a engine and bearings wear faster too, its part of the game.
