Default do i need a map sensor or maf???? STS guys help

hey guys im doin a sts turbo with a trt FMIC. i was talkin to a tuner today and he said that my stock MAF isn't going to work well over 2lbs of boost he said it will be maxed out. so he said i either need a new MAF or a 2 bar map conversion so does that just mean i need a new map sensor? Im new to the turbo world i know some but i am learning. My plans are to run about 5 to 6lbs of boost to be safe, so what do i need exactly a new MAF or a MAP? Thanks

The 2 bar is preferred but an OE MAF should do just fine w/ 5-9 or 10 psi. I've been running 8-10 since install and have never had an issue.

I agree. I HAD a MAF tune on my STS H/C car and it was safe at 5PSI. It was a bit "sluggish" till 4500RPM or so in 1st and 2nd gear because a 1-bar MAF tune cannot differentiate between the fuel requirements for lower gears vs. the higher fuel requirements for higher gear loads (3rd-6th gear). I switched to a 2-bar SD tune last December and this WILL allow to compensate for different fuel needs thoughout the buildup of boost, which eliminates the sluggishness in lower gears vs higher gears.

So, in short you can safely runa a MAF tune at 5PSI. However, if you spend the couple hundred extra for a 2-bar MAP sensor and a 2-bar tune, it will net more power throughout the RPM range in every gear and make the car feel much "peppier".

Just my $0.02

you wont max it at that boost, but 2bar is better, the 99 ecu doent have as a couple tables that the 01-02 do that help with the tune in boosted apps. 98 is the worst for this and 01-02 are the best with stock file but upgrade to the 2bar OS and you will be fine. as for the part # im not sure off the top of my head. but the local gm house should be able to help you out with what has a two bar map on it.

I know I've posted the part number in the past as well as the number for the silicone grommet. Yes it is the cobalt ss map sensor and you have to slightly modify it. Ours clips in on one side while the two bar clips on both sides. Just need to shave the mounting tabs off one side.

Does a sd tune usually cost more money? Where can I get the silicone piece to make the map fit and will the cobalt ss map just plug into my existing connector or do I have to change anything

silicone piece is the same for either car I just recommend getting a new one because the new map does not come with one and if you are able to get the old one off it will not be in good shape
