Default Turbo off a diesel??

hey guys! i know this is going to be kinda hard to answer cause i dont have the specs and am completely new to this. lol but im going to do the 6.0l/l92 combo and want to put a front mount tubo and intercooler. at the shop where my buddy works at, they have turbos off of diesel garbage trucks. LOL but im wondering if you could use one for a budget turbo build? ive heard that usually tubos off of diesels are bigger than others.. like i said, im new to this. thanks guys!

Post pictures. My friend's car runs an air research turbo off of a semi. The car just went 10.96 on it's first trip to the track.

Here's the car: http://lsxextreme.com/showthread.php?t=617

thats the hard part. lol there are LOTS to choose from. i was just curious if it could even be done. im going to want to put a g-body in the 9's when i turn up the boost. then run lower boost on the street. basicly i got jelous of all the comferts you guys get by building these motors and want to do it in a g-body. in your guys's oppinions. would you use a turbo off a semi or go get after market? i know using one of those turbos, i could reach my goal but if i can get the turbo for basicly free... lol thanks!

It all depends on how much money you have to spend. My friend got his for free. You're either taking free and sacrificing efficieny or $1200 and a lot of money.

you will be fine...i am running a diesel turbo myself and is working well. just find the one with the smallest hotside a/r. just remember the smaller the hotside ...the faster your spool will be. and the faster you can spool the earlier the power will kick in.

ok. this is going to sound stupid, but how do i find out the a/r? it probably sounds weird, but you get what you pay for. lol so im nervous to get a free turbo. lol but if it will work and it sounds like you guys are confident in that, i might just try it. if i can find one that best matches my combo. have you got any times at all with your set up?

if you looking for the A/R alot of times there stamped on the compressor side (intake air) should look something like .76 .64 at my work we have alot of cat diesels and warranty replacement turbos laying around i was thinking about using 2 for a twin setup but they were internally regulated and thats no fun

peanut butta lol yeah look forward to buying an external wastegate to control one. and like mentioned before the a/r is usually cast on the turbo. i myself still need to replace my valve springs and get a ton of float at anything over 5psi.hopefully within the next month i can get them replaced and make it out to the track

so i can just block off the internal wastegate and put on an external wastegate? i searched it last night and people said they are on there cause its cheaper for the stock tubos. they said they cant open up fast enough sometimes and cause serges or boost creep. what would be a good a/r for a 6.0l with l92 heads wanting to put a regal in the 9's at no more than 15 psi and around 6500 red line? would that be a question for dr. turbo if hes out there? lol thanks guys!

I run one of the S475 turbos from borg warner, which is basically a detroit diesel turbo. Mine has a T6 exhaust side with a 1.1 a/r which is fairly common. It comes in around 3800 on a stock 5.3 I think it will work pretty well on a 6.0 sized deal, should lower the spool time to around 3400 im hoping. Thats when my converter comes in and to be honest even with the 5.3 its more than enough. Gives the car at least a chance to catch its breath before the boost kills all traction.

nice! what rpm does it reach max boost?its soo nice to have people that have done this before to find out what works! lol what kind of numbers or times is that producing? to get all the info i need. do i have to remove the turbos? im assuming so. it would be nice to know if it was even close before i went to all that work. from what im gathering, i need it to have a a/r of between .70-1.1 before i even tear the turbo off? thanks!
