Default Trap Door Question

Is it possible to remove the factory fuel pump using the trap door method on a 98? I made the cuts needed and have access to the pump but one of the lines is longer and looks like it runs down to the front of the tank? At this point it doest look like it can be done.

That is the one that I used to change my pump. Also, you realize that you have to disconnect the fuel lines right?

Yeah I know but one of the lines disconnect(Pressure I believe) is not accessible. Maybe cut an L shaped door instead of a square? If I stand at the hatch facing forward, the line i cant get to the disconnect go's straight forward outta the pump, the takes a left hand turn and dissapears!

Yes you have this absolutely correct, I just did mine this weekend. You will need to cut an L shape to reach the line to disconnect it. I was going to take pics and post a write up but got lazy and just did the pump. I could not get my hand in there to disconnect the line w/o cutting the L shape. Then I went to menards got a piece of sheet metal and some RTV silicon and covered it all up when I was done. I also used duck tape over the silicone b/c the stuff take 24hrs to fully cure and I didnt have that much time to wait. Then just covered it all back up and I was done.

I did the same thing as you. You can reach the other two that you are saying you need the L shape for.

I know this is an old thread, but for reference purposes, it is possible to get that line disconnected. I used 2 flat blade screwdrivers to reach way under there and depress the tangs to unhook the line, using the tip of one screwdriver to push back the female connector at the same time. To reinstall, the tangs have to be oriented exactly as they were so the tangs can pop back into place. I grabbed the female connector with needle nose pliers while pushing on the line to make sure it seated completely in place.

To make it easier to pull up/put in the assembly, I unhooked the float by removing a plastic lock, then depressing the tangs that held float in place. I didn't unhook it's wiring, but just having it loose helped a lot and prevented possible damage.

Another thing: see the metal clip that holds the FPR in SKI's last pic? See how it is installed with the ears up? Well mine was installed, probably at the factory, with the ears down, ate a pin hole in the flex line from the pump, caused hard starting issues.

I used some long needle nose pliers and was able to undo the quick disconnect without cutting the L shape...i think i have pics too.
